Ashley for a boy

mandatorytakeout · 01/05/2020 19:06

While the name is originally a boy's name as far as I understand, it has dramatically shifted to being a girl's name.

What do you think of it being used for a boy now? Particularly interested in people based in the US where it seems to be a highly popular girl name

Any name combo ideas?
Thanks xxx

Ashley
846050 female, 15667 male in US.
Indeed far more girls than boys. But still a very decent number of boys.

I know far more male Ashley's than I do female Ashley's in real life.

Personally I think it's a nice name that can be given to either sex.

Womanlywiles · 01/05/2020 20:00

I am in the USA. It has become considered a female name here so you will be setting your son up for a lifetime of explaining himself and possibly being bullied or feeling emasculated. Sorry. Same for male Kelly, Kendall or Taylor.

Personally I think it's a lovely male name, makes me think of Scarlett O'Hara pouting "Ashley! Ooh Ash - lay!" and flouncing when he prefers angelic Melanie.

I think it’s a boys name in the UK and a girls name in the US.

It’s a bit 80s but it’s a nice enough name. I think it works best with something classic as a middle name.

Ashley James
Ashley William
Ashley Thomas
Ashley Edward
Ashley Benjamin

In England and Wales in 2018 (last year we have official statistics for) there's double the number of boy Ashley (than girl Ashley's)
Definitely predominantly a boy name in England

I'm from Ireland but I love Ashley for a boy. It's far nicer in my opinion.

MartiniDry · 01/05/2020 22:40

English resident here. When I hear the name Ashley I immediately assume that the person is male. The first person the name brings to mind is Ashley Cole. It's a lovely name and far more so for a boy than it is for a girl

Rtmhwales · 01/05/2020 22:41

American. It's only female here. You'd never hear of a male Ashley.

DramaAlpaca · 01/05/2020 23:26

I think of it as a male name and much prefer it for boys. I'm English. It's one of those names that I like but wouldn't use myself.

Thisismytimetoshine · 01/05/2020 23:27

It's a bit wet.

Ashley is one of the great examples of a boys name that is now used for girls so no longer suitable for boys. However boys names, James, Ashley, Noah etc are perfectly suitable for girls..

DwangelaForever · 01/05/2020 23:31

I like it. When its spelt Ashley it's very masculine, I always think of Ashley Cole. I think people are being dramatic saying you're setting your child up for a lifetime of bullying. There are far worse names out there that people call their kids these days. If you like it go for it!

Tillygetsit · 01/05/2020 23:33

I prefer Asher tbh

Marimari93 · 01/05/2020 23:45

I like this magne for a boy - great choice. I know men and women called Ashley. It's a name that's truly unisex to me kind of like Jordan.

Thisismytimetoshine · 02/05/2020 00:16

The name James is not "perfectly suitable for a girl" Confused

Whatsgoingonrightnow · 02/05/2020 08:55

I know a female Ashlie who married a male Ashley, not even kidding Grin.

I’m not keen on it personally, it’s very 80s/early 90s.
