Boys version of a name

I am having a baby boy (currently 21 weeks) and have just seen the name Cailin on a girls name thread. I think this name is beautiful. Can anyone think of a boys name that sounds similar? I don’t want a made up name.

Cillian is pronounced KILL-yun/KILL-yan depending on your accent, but always with a hard 'c'.

The only boys' name I can think of that sounds similar to Cailín is Colin. But I doubt you want to use that!

massistar · 30/04/2020 15:53

I know of a baby boy called Cailan.

HopeWish · 30/04/2020 15:55

I had a friend when I was at school called Celyn. Its a welsh boys name.

I know a Caelan, Callan, Kellan and then the more popular Callum, which have a similar vibe.

Pieceofpurplesky · 30/04/2020 16:02

I teach a Caelan. Lovely boy and lovely name

CleverQuacks · 30/04/2020 16:12

So second question, Caelan is a Gaelic name. I have no link to Scotland or Ireland. Would you still use it?

OP as others have said, 'Cailin' is not really a name; it's just the word for girl. And it's not pronounced as it is spelled - it's either Caah-lin or Coh-leen.

There is a Scotttish Gaelic boy's name that looks similar to Cailin. That's 'Cailean' and it's pronounced approx 'Colin'. Perfectly good name but ...

Irish Mumsnetters will correct me, I am sure, but there is an Irish boy's name Caolan (with a fada over the last a). It's pronounced either kay-lawn or quay-lawn. Caelan mentioned above is presumably a modern version of that name but does not follow trad Gaelic spelling rules.

florascotia2 · 30/04/2020 16:20

OP To answer your second question, I think you need to ask an Irish person, preferably a Gaelic speaker.

However, if I were using a name from another language I'd try to make sure I had the correct - or at least an acceptable - spelling. That seems a friendly sort of thing to do, and also stops the possibility of raised eyebrows at you - or worse -your DC.

florascotia2 · 30/04/2020 16:32

Forgot to add:
As far as I know, Caelan IS used in England. The equivalent for girls would, I suppose, be Neve for Niamh - ie an English spelling of a Gaelic name.

I didn't intend my previous posts to be critical and I hope they didn't come across that way - I think it's great that you are asking

Um, I know a boy called Cailin! His parents are American and German.

strawberry2017 · 30/04/2020 18:27

I've seen a couple of American shows that have had Caelan for a boy. It sounds lovely

Mumma4262 · 30/04/2020 18:42

I was going to suggest Cillian.

I would pronounce it Killy-an as I know 2 little boys with this name and it’s how the parents pronounce it.

donutsatnight · 30/04/2020 18:42

Cillian just like actor Cillian Murphy pronounced as Killy-an

Merename · 30/04/2020 18:54

The Caelan I know is Scottish, but I don’t see why you couldn’t use it in England if you like it.

Adding to what flora is saying about Cailín meaning girl, the pronunciation of this is more like Colleen, but I am assuming you like the pronunciation as it would be read in English, given you like Caelan too.

123Dancewithme · 30/04/2020 22:35

Keelan
