Good morning. I absolutely adore the name Edward for our DS1 (if it's a boy). We don't know of any young Edwards near where we live but are concerned about its growing popularity.

We love that it is a classic, tradition, timeless and refreshing to hear against some of the other top names.

We are stuck with a middle names to go with Edward and a two syllable surname?

Any help re middle names/Edward/its popularity would be much appreciated!

Edward is lovely. Definitely making a comeback, but I wouldn't say it was overly popular - Teddy is much more so. Much prefer Edward though.

Middle names:
Edward Owen
Edward James
Edward Tobias
Edward Laurie
Edward Francis
Edward Rowan

Edward is lovely, great name choice.
There isn’t any Edwards where I live either, none in my DS school or the nursery. Popularity is definitely regional.
Edward James
Edward Jack
Edward John
Edward George
Edward Leo
I’m not sure, I would however stick with a one, maybe two syllable middle name.

I have an Edward Smile I haven't met any other baby Edward's yet (mine is 1). I have met a Teddy and and Eddie, but neither of them are actually Edward, We occasionally call ours Ted, but he is mainly Edward or Ed. It's a great name and he suits it perfectly.

Our other DS is Hugh, so we have Hugh Edwards like the newsreader Grin

istheresomethingwrongwithme · 30/04/2020 11:38

Our Edward is Edward Thomas (his Dad's name) and we have a one syllable surname. So many lovely traditional names suit Edward as a middle name:

Edward John
Edward James
Edward George
Edward William
Edward Peter
Edward Stephen

I teach a 9 yo Edward and he is just best kid! It a great name and was on my name list for our son. It’s a solid classic name. I’ve taught a few but it’s not overly used - not one of the names you’ll see multiples of on a class list year in year out.

Whatsyourflava · 30/04/2020 11:40

The numbers of Edwards have been declining since 2016 if you look at the official statistics so it’s not as if it’s about to leap into the top 10. On current trajectory it’ll be outside top 30 soon

Spudlet · 30/04/2020 11:42

I have an Edward. He’s mostly Teddy or Ted at the moment, but I like the fact that as he grows, he’ll have many name options to choose from - Ed, Ned, Eddie, Edward, or he can keep to Ted/Teddy of course! There is another Teddy at his preschool so they call him Teddy-Edward, which makes me smile - I think it’s really sweet.

His middle name is David, which is a family name.

Whatsyourflava · 30/04/2020 11:42

I’d maybe pick something a bit more “out there”
for the middle name if popularity is a concern (although I actually think Edward James is really nice):

Edward Sidney
Edward Barnaby
Edward Rudi
Edward Milo
Edward Miles
Edward Otis
Edward Casper
Edward Tristan

Whatsyourflava · 30/04/2020 11:43

Edward Marley
Edward Percy
Edward Ellis
Edward Blake

Edward Peter (Peter very underused)
Edward Christopher
Edward Joseph

Edward is such a lovely name. My dd's best friend is Edward and they are both 4.
I would definitely use the Full Edward on the birth certificate and then if you think it suits them at a later stage can use Teddy or Ed as a nickname.
Would go for another classic name as a middle name.
Love Edward Thomas.

legallybunhead · 30/04/2020 12:32

Thanks all. I love your suggestions. I do think it needs a more unusual but still classic middle name. Love the suggestions of Peter, Dominic, Miles and James (James was another of our considerations for FN) I also like Macsen for the middle spot (Welsh roots)

Good to hear that it is downward trending for now. I honestly love the fact that the same is so classic but has lots of love potential nn for babies. I think it may be locational too as I don't know any near me.

Lots of Freddie, Arlo/Marlo, Oliver/Ollie, Harry, George, Albie 's seem time be popular in my area.

Beautiful name, I know 2 babies born this year given this name!! So must be on the up. But always classic so no problem. I also love all the nn that can be xxx

cptartapp · 30/04/2020 19:29

Edward is lovely in its entirety.
Edward James
Edward Christopher
Edward Alexander
Edward Reuben

istheresomethingwrongwithme · 01/05/2020 06:17

@Spudlet Teddy-Edward is sooo sweet!

babynamelover · 01/05/2020 08:00

I like Edward but I love Edwin :).
It's a classic name with lots of nicknames and sounds good on an adult.
Edward Maxwell
Edward Willoughby
Edward Frederick
Edward Ulysses
Edward Otto
Edward Harvey
Edward Leopold
Edward Bennett
Edward George

I don't think there's many middles that don't sound nice!

Do you have any family members you would like to honor? Both my daughters have middles from Grandparents 😊.

ZebraKid71 · 01/05/2020 08:34

I know a few little Edwards in my area. It's nice but I prefer Edwin and Edmund of the Ed names.

GreyGardens88 · 01/05/2020 08:35

I like it
