Are there any names you rather like but whose meaning you just can't get past?

Or do meanings not mean much to you?

Meanings aren't much of a concern for me unless it is a particularly negative association. I like but would never use Temperance (setting a kid right up with that!), Virginia (can we stop judging women based on what they do with there vulvas) and Judas (that'd be some reeeaally awkward introductions with my Irish friends).

I also despise the name Tuppence which basically means "nothing" or some tiny trivial amount. I don't care tuppence...she didn't have tuppence to rub together...etc etc. Might as well call your kid "Insignificant". But the -ance sound is pretty. Smile

I say all your baby whatever you want, as long as the their names, when linked together, don't sound dodgy!
People I so judgemental and harsh when it comes to choosing your child's name!
Always got to have their say, which bugs the shit out of me! That's why we are keeping our baby name (once chosen) to ourselves and will be announced after the birth.
Meanings don't really mean anything to me, it's about what the name means to you 🥰🥰
If we have a girl then she will have Margaret as her middle name, as this was my DH's Grans name. I don't care what the Greek version, or Latin meaning is! Lol 😝

Call not all! Lol

The thing I find strange is I’ve never once bothered to look up the meaning of MY OWN NAME!
And yet I’m obsessed with meanings of a baby names for my kids.

How odd! (I mean that nicely.) I wonder why you are indifferent to the meaning of yours? Or rather, so into theirs. Maybe you're keen to instil in/bestow on your DC those qualities, assuming the meanings are positive character attributes or something happy.

I really like name meanings. Have even researched names that have the same meanings as DH's and I or something we love the meaning of.

I have a friend named orla, who was unhappy to discover than her appropriated Irish name without the accent means vomit.

I hear you OP. To me meanings are crucial. The meaning of certain lovely names put me off giving them to DC.

Having said that, I have no objection to any of your examples! For instance I don't see Virginia as 'that' kind of 'pure', just pure.

But of course, what meanings each of us finds positive or negative is also very personal!

Most names don't actually mean anything, despite what all the baby name websites will tell you. I also don't think that the meaning of the word it originated from in an ancient language that no one speaks today matters at all.

I do think it matters if the word still has a meaning in contemporary language, which is why I think the trend of picking random words and using them as names is problematic.

Not my biggest worry with Tuppence!

I don’t think it matters at all, but:

  • it does make me smile that my eldest’s name’s meaning is very fitting of their personality.
  • My youngest’s name originally went on the list because of the meaning and it was a name we both loved

If there’s been a name we loved but didn’t like the meaning, we’d have used it, and if it was the other way round, we wouldn’t.

It’s just funny if you’ve got a terrible name meaning
