Hello

I know the traditional spelling is Halle but can someone please confirm that Halle is the same pronunciation as Hallie ? Or are is Halle pronounced like hal?

I like the sounding of hallie but would rather use the traditional/proper spelling of Halle if they are the same/pronounced the same!

Hope that makes sense!

I would pronounce both as Hally

Water or not I'm right is another matter entirely Grin

firstpregnancy1 · 27/04/2020 16:52

Thank you

Also my slight concern is that it might be too 'american' but I have no idea why I think this? Anyone else?

I’d pronounce them both as Hally as pp said. Halle as in Halle Berry.

My friend used the spelling Hallie for her little girl and she said so many people have mistaken the name for Hayley (I really don’t know how?!)

Wheresthebiffer2 · 27/04/2020 17:03

The baby in "The Big Bang Theory" tv show is called Halley, (not sure how they spell it), but named after the comet.

Hannah021 · 27/04/2020 17:08

Halle and Holly are beautiful names Flowers

cheeseycracker · 27/04/2020 17:11

Maybe you fee it's American because the first person that springs to mind is Hollywood star Halle Berry. But she was born in the UK so actually it doesn't count!

firstpregnancy1 · 27/04/2020 17:12

@cheeseycracker that makes perfect sense!! Thank you

I love Halle (hal-lay) as in the orchestra. I see that as a totally different name to Hal-lee - but the spellings of ones I have met don’t seem to have any consistency.

We wanted something to reflect Manchester for DD’s middle name - and until almost the last minute were set on Halle.

Unfortunately my (autistic) brother thought it was short for Halleluiah (and I had visions of him singing that to her) so she’s an Emmeline instead. Wasn’t quite brave enough for Hacienda

daisypond · 27/04/2020 17:38

It’s not really a traditional name, though. It’s a surname name. Halle Berry wasn’t born in the UK, she was born in Ohio, and she’s named after a department store in her home town. Halle was her middle name originally.

daisypond · 27/04/2020 17:38

I think Halle as in orchestra.

AngelaScandal · 27/04/2020 17:45

Parent Trap

Umnoway · 27/04/2020 17:58

Yeah it’s pronounced the same like Halle Berry.

sourcreamnchives · 27/04/2020 18:01

Halitosis

Marimari93 · 27/04/2020 18:03

The same way Halle Berry is pronounced. I think her name sounds particularly pretty and appealing because of the similar sound endings and same syllables.

I like Halle, the only thing that would put me off is the lie/ly trend

Tilly
Milly
Kelly
Ellie
Holly
Charlie
Amelie

Daisypond oops teaches me for not fact checking lol.

Who am I thinking of then?! Bizarre

LotusClover · 27/04/2020 18:28

Yes, both are pronounced "ha-lee". Halle is the traditional spelling and is nicer in my opinion.

123Dancewithme · 27/04/2020 22:06

I thought Hallie was the traditional spelling, originally short for Harriet. Halle Berry was named after a department store in Ohio!

123Dancewithme · 27/04/2020 22:09

Hallie is also the most popular / widely used spelling in the UK.

whatausername · 27/04/2020 22:35

I like the name and prefer the spelling "Halle". Not sure why, maybe because Hallie looks too like a diminutive or because Halle was the spelling I first came across.

bridgetreilly · 27/04/2020 22:37

I think I say Halle and Hallie slightly differently. Halle is more like Hall-ay, though the ay is short and unaccented. Almost Hall-uh.

IVflytrap · 27/04/2020 22:54

I would think of Hallie as the standard spelling, and Halle as a variant one (only used because of Halle Berry). Halle as a spelling isn't really intuitive imo - if it wasn't for the fact that most people have heard of Halle Berry, in the UK, we'd naturally pronounce Halle as the word "hall".

Smile19 · 28/04/2020 07:24

Hallie can be a nn for Harriet which you may be interested to know.

peperethecat · 28/04/2020 09:27

I would spell it Hallie, like in the Parent Trap.

RuffleCrow · 28/04/2020 09:32

I knew a Hallie who was one of those people who would insult you to your face with a sweet smile. It's ruined the name for me, sorry, becase I used to call her Halitosis in my head whilst she was doing it.
