I'm Welsh and my husbands English. We live in England. I love the name Ffion for a girl. In Wales it's a fairly standard name. Would people in England struggle with the spelling/pronunciation do you think?

I like it. I think people would struggle with the spelling but then again even people with bog standard names have to spell out their names nowadays, there are so many variations. So I wouldn't be too worried about it. As you say, it is a Recognisable name to plenty of people

I’m English, I live in Wales.
Ffion is lovely. I don’t have problems with the pronunciation or spelling. Go for it if you love it.

SquirtleSquad · 26/04/2020 23:12

I'm English, not seen it before would guess pronunciation is Fee-on?

DramaAlpaca · 26/04/2020 23:14

I think it's lovely. I'm English, live in Ireland, know how to spell and pronounce Ffion and can distinguish it from the Irish boys' name Fionn Smile

It's a lovely name and I don't see why the pronunciation would be a problem. Some of us will recall it being the name of William Hague's wife, which is the first time I heard it, while he was leader of the Conservative party.

Love the name. Also associate it with William Hague’s wife, which is also when I first came across it. Has stood out to me ever since as a name I like.

I’m English, living in awngladn and have heard of the name, I love this name.

Even if people are unsure how to spell/pronounce it, they soon will.

Great choice!

In French fion is a very vulgar way to say arsehole.
I know you have an extra f and I understand it is a traditional name, but I would never ever give a child a name that has such a bad meaning in a neighboring country!

MikeUniformMike · 27/04/2020 09:57

Ffion is fine OP. Very pretty name meaning Foxglove.

CaffiSaliMali · 27/04/2020 10:16

Ffion is lovely OP. I have a relative called Ffion, but she's in Wales.

The letter Ff may cause some issues as it's uniquely Welsh and some people won't realise that Ff is the Welsh letter for F and the Welsh letter F is pronounced V. (I once knew a Hefin in England who was constantly called Heffin). I knew an Angharad as well who had issues.

So she may get the odd Fuh-fee-on pronunciation.

I have a Welsh name in England and it gets mispronounced a lot. Like you and your husband my Mam is Welsh and Dad is English.

The mispronouncuation of my name doesn't bother me that much as I love my name and that it links to my Welsh heritage. I intend to use Welsh names for my own DC as long as I can persuade DH! However, the mispronunciation does bother my mother - worth thinking about how much it will bother you.

Ffion is lovely though, it would be on my list if it weren't for my relative already having the name.
