Is Leo too popular

Hi looking for some advice. Our second little one is due to arrive in August, we already have a nearly two year old little boy called Finlay. We chose the name Finlay years before he was born but then realised how popular it had become, we still love the name but wish it was a little less common.

We don’t know if we are expecting a little boy or girl (but all set on a girls name) and having a little difficulty agreeing on a boys name, I absolutely love Leo, my husband likes the name also but has said it’s too popular. What are other people’s honest thoughts. Some other ideas (although neither of us can both 100% agree on) are Hunter, Rex, Alro and Casper.

Please can I have your thoughts

You need statistics not opinion if popularity is a big factor for you. Leo was number 6 last year the England and Wales name statistics, Finlay is about 130. But factor in the Finley's and Fin's and Findlay's, it's probably more popular. Only you can decide if it is too popular or not for you. I think it goes well worn Finlay, but if you have regrets because of its popularity then Leo isn't for you. Use the Dark Greener names tool to check exact stats and trends.

I think Leo is lovely

If you discount Leo due to popularity then it makes no sense to pick Hunter or Arlo instead (I love both but they’re 2 of the fastest rising names and could overtake Leo in the coming years)

Rex and Casper are much less common according to official stats though. How about Laurence (nn Laurie) if you want a rarer L name?
Or what about a name like Barnaby, Peter, Tristan, Otis, Miles/Milo

If you like Arlo what about Milo or Otto which are less common

Whatsyourflava · 26/04/2020 16:30

How about Rudy/Rudi as an alternative to Rex
Or Vincent nn Vinnie might be your style? Eli? Ellis?

Jamiladodger · 26/04/2020 16:31

It's popular but whether or not it's too popular is up to you.

I think people like it because it has the modern flavour of names like Arlo but also has the Lion association which makes it "strong" seeming.

I love the name Leo, I don’t think it’s overly popular, great choice.

Whatsyourflava · 26/04/2020 16:39

I’ve never actually met a baby Leo

Blursula · 26/04/2020 16:42

Exact same dilemma over here - it’s our number one choice atm but it’s sooo popular. It’s at number 6 but check the stats in your specific area. I did that and it came out at number 2, so even more so! It’s a gorgeous name though. Goes well with Finlay too. Casper is on our list also!

I don't know any Leo's and I think it's a lovely name.

NameChange30 · 26/04/2020 16:50

It is popular but it's lovely.
The latest stats from the ONS are 2018 so 2 years behind but you might find it interesting to look at figures for your specific region:

It's much more popular in London than in the North East, for example.
Personally I would use it anyway.

onlinelinda · 26/04/2020 16:52

I like it and also it isnt tacky.

daisypond · 26/04/2020 17:01

I like it, but it is popular where I am. I know a few primary school ones, and a couple of older ones.

Marimari93 · 26/04/2020 19:11

I think Leo is a wonderful name!
Fab boy name.

Is it popular? Judging my statistics it's very popular. I think boy names ending in O are very inn right now: Otto, Theo, Hugo, Leo, Arlo...

So yes it's trendy, popular, whatever you want to call it but so what? But why let that stop you if you love it?

anxietrist · 26/04/2020 19:12

I think Leo is lovely and I only know one. I like all you're other names too except maybe hunter... not sure about that one

BertieBotts · 26/04/2020 19:15

Bear in mind baby due in August could be the Leo star sign. I have one and people always ask if that's why we chose his name! It's not and I don't mind, but in case it will bother you. I don't think it's too popular at all.

binkyblinky · 26/04/2020 19:15

I have a baby Leo, he is 18 months old. I call him Leonidas sometimes (Ancient Greek name!) but he is christened Leo.
He is also LeeLee or Lill-Lee for short x

I also have a Cameron and a Ben
