Could be from a video games, movie, cartoon etc. Either directly naming your child after the character you love or you just happen to love the name used by a character.

Thoughts on doing this?

Yabvu to consider Minnie...

zscaler · 26/04/2020 13:35

I think it depends on the name. ‘Lara’ is fine, ‘Princess Peach’ less so.

VirginWestCoast · 26/04/2020 13:36

Depends on the name...
Frodo is probably a bit cruel.

Blogdog · 26/04/2020 13:36

Depends on the name. Zelda would be ok. Pikachu not so much.

MarieQueenofScots · 26/04/2020 13:36

Depends on the name!

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 26/04/2020 13:43

For me it depends on what the character is like, and if they have completed their story arc.

So apparently there's loads of toddlers called Danerys around. In game of thrones she goes crazy and kills loads of folk at the end of the show. It's something to think about!!

Orphlids · 26/04/2020 13:52

Yes, depending on the name and the nature of the character. My daughter is named after a character in my favourite opera. She is not my favourite character, but I love the name. I do like a reflection of the parents’ passion in their children’s names.

BikeRunSki · 26/04/2020 13:54

I’m named after the eponymous lead character of my parents’ favourite book. It was their individual favourite book before they met. They decided on their first dare that they would call me this name if they ever had a girl. I have 2 older brothers!

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 26/04/2020 13:55

Definitely depends on the name.

Erik - OK. Phantom - not so much Grin

BikeRunSki · 26/04/2020 13:57

I know a 5 year old Khaleesi. She has several siblings which much more mainstream biblical names.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 26/04/2020 13:57

I think if it's obviously copied from a character, rather than being a normal name then people will make assumptions about you that you might not like and that will follow your child through school/life.

Twickerhun · 26/04/2020 13:58

My DD was named by My DSD after a character on Nickelodeon. We are ok with the name but tend to ignore the nickleodeon connection, it’s now just her name

HandfulOfFlowers · 26/04/2020 13:58

Sonic? Hagrid? Roadrunner?

Tonemeth · 26/04/2020 14:00

Horrible, tacky and a shame for the child.

MarieQueenofScots · 26/04/2020 14:01

Horrible, tacky and a shame for the child

That would depend on the name surely.

There are characters with perfectly normal names!

Tonemeth · 26/04/2020 14:02

(Name dependent of course. So Jane after the eldest bennett sister batter in, Meg after Meg march, lovely, Dumbledore, seek a second opinion)

MarieQueenofScots · 26/04/2020 14:02

I named my daughter after an author, picked when I was 9.

My grandmother very nearly named my mother a very unusual name after her favourite character in a novel. If I have another I’m very tempted to have the name in there if I have a girl!

Tonemeth · 26/04/2020 14:03

Cross post marie!

ZeldasMum · 26/04/2020 14:03

My daughter is named Zelda. I have no regrets regarding the name, it suits her to a t. It's easy to spell and there aren't many around.

I love the name despite the character, but my husband is big into Zelda games so for him this was a big plus.

MarieQueenofScots · 26/04/2020 14:03

Hah great minds!

GrumpyHoonMain · 26/04/2020 14:03

Harry (Harry Potter), George (George’s Marvellous Medicine), Charlie (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory ), Jun (Boys over Flowers), Sabrina, Clarissa, Xavier, Orphelia, Juliet, Othello, Romeo, Paris, Minerva, etc etc are all fairly good names. Where I draw the line is names from made up languages like Frodo and Legolas.

okiedokieme · 26/04/2020 14:05

Depends on the name - there were sisters called Chardonnay and Merlot at my kids school, now that is tacky!

HalfTermHalfTerm · 26/04/2020 14:11

I am named after a character from my mum’s favourite book. You wouldn’t ever know though, because it’s a fairly ‘normal’ name, so I don’t constantly get “Ohhh! Like X from Y!”. There’s a big difference between calling your daughter Alice because you like Alice in Wonderland and calling your son Bilbo because you like The Hobbit!

I’m also trying not to think about all the poor little girls out there called Daenerys...

1990shopefulftm · 26/04/2020 14:12

the name we have in mind if we have a girl, is a character from a show DH likes but i don't think anyone would directly make the link unless they watch it.

AdaColeman · 26/04/2020 14:14

Names like those from GOT will date very quickly, and very soon fall out of fashion. All the little Khaleesis will spend a lifetime spelling/correcting their name.
