The letter Y

My partner is English and we will be raising our LO (due Sept) in England. I am Cuban :)

It is somewhat of a tradition in my family that our first names begin with Y (although not strictly...tradition may be a strong word)

I would love to find an English first name that starts with a Y. Girl and boy suggestions required. Do you know any nice ones?

Thank you so so much, :o)

Yvonne

Tbh you are not going to find many ‘English’ Y names but there are lots of other Y names from other languages/cultures that are used by the English mainstream.

Jamiladodger · 25/04/2020 12:02

I don't think we have many Y names, not that I know of.

Girls-
Yulia - just beautiful

Yasmin

Yvonne (the Y sounds like an E here though)

Yvette (same as with Yvonne)

Yara

Boys-

Yardley

I tried to keep them as "English" as possible but I think failed.

I strongly suggest looking at names from your family (maybe a grand parent or great cousin)

I had a look and there are not many Y names used in England. Sorry!

midsomermurderess · 25/04/2020 12:03

Yseult.

florascotia2 · 25/04/2020 12:06

As millicent says.

None of these is English, but all have been used in the UK:

Yseult (French)

Yolanda (Spanish - but you will know this, of course!)

Yelena (Russian)

In the Middle Ages, Isabel was occasionally spelled Ysabel.

Queenoftheashes · 25/04/2020 12:07

Ygritte 😂

Xipeach · 25/04/2020 12:07

@Jamiladodger this is what my other half said but I am trying to prove him wrong 😂 oh well.

Thank you everyone. I realise I am being too rigid. Such a shame! Make more Y names England! 😃😉

Yes, not many English Y names I'm afraid. Y is a tough letter.

How about:

Girl
Yulia
Yelena
Ysobel (may be confusing as we usually spell it with an I)
Yolanda
Ylenia
Yulissa
Boy
Yuri

:/ all not English btw.

Yvonne is English and isn't very common either so it would make nice change to see it on a LO.

Good luck!

Ellmau · 25/04/2020 12:46

Yolanda/Yolande
Yseult

Ellmau · 25/04/2020 12:47

Yvonne is English

It's actually French, but was popular here for a period (60s?). I feel it would be a bit dated.

Disfordarkchocolate · 25/04/2020 15:28

Yootha?

CaffiSaliMali · 25/04/2020 17:25

I used to know an English Ysabelle. Her parents just preferred the name spelled with a Y rather than an I.

haverhill · 25/04/2020 17:27
