Come across an usual name when I've been reading blogs and lists. I think it could be unisex and it is of french origins, meaning "young wolf".

What do you think of Lowe?

It’s the German word for lion

BuffaloCauliflower · 24/04/2020 17:23

I’m not a fan of surnames as first names. Also don’t you think it sounds a bit sad? Like feeling low

It's a Scots word meaning firelight
as burneyfanny says, it's German for lion
It's also a germanicised form of Levy (which comes from a Hebrew word meaning joining) used by Ashkenazi Jews
according to Urban Dictionary lowe-it (short for allow) means accept it, calm down

online French translator comes up with louveteau for wolf cub, which males it a bit of a stretch when the old german loeuwe is right there...

I can't say I'm a fan. As well as "low" meaning depressing, it's a very flat and uninteresting word in itself.

Raul, Randy and Ralph... to be honest, I think I'd rather the child was called Wolf.

(Obviously one should never name a British child Randy, and Raul and Ralph have pronunciation Ishoos...)

How is Lowe super unisex? I was hoping for a true unisex name... like Sue or Tracy or.... Elizabeth ;) Lowe seems sad to me.

bridgetreilly · 24/04/2020 20:33

Surname.

bridgetreilly · 24/04/2020 20:33

Plus it's just... low. Which is a weird thing to want to call a child of either sex.

LotusClover · 24/04/2020 20:48

Definitely a boy's name but I don't like it at all. As others have said, "Lowe" = low = sad.

georgialondon · 24/04/2020 20:50

Not a very positive name for a child

Spanneroo · 24/04/2020 21:02

It sounds a bit solemn. I'd say boy's name tbh.

Slightly off-topic but our youngest is Wilf and our 5yo thought he was called Wolf for weeks before we realised! Grin

I prefer the Cornish boys name Lowen
