36 weeks, second guessing name choice

I'm in love with the name Albie and I'm going to stick with that. But I was planning to call him Albert formally on the birth certificate and I'm not sure I actually like the name at all. I do want to give him the option of a formal, adult name.
Is there anything else that can reasonably be shortened to Albie? He will have 2 middle names already so it's not an option to make Albie into a middle name.

Be kind, I have two annoying Christian names, give the baby easy to spell and easy to say names.
Think on it

I like Albie just as it is. My son has a friend named Albie, not formally Albert x

Albid is fine as it is.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I was quite warming up to Alben when I realised it won't work with our last name at all Sad too rhymey unfortunately.

Maybe I should just go with Albie? Does it not need a formal name?

I would always choose to give a full name, not a nickname. If you don't like Albert, I think Albus is the best of the other choices. If he turns out to be a Harry Potter fan, that would be very cool.

I love Albie and understand your problem - I don't mind Albert but don't love it like Albie. I had a friend with exactly the same question, but she decided she did like Albert enough to use it (though ended up with a girl).
These are some less obvious Albie full names - but then I think you can use anything as a nn for anything and not so into strict rules on these things:
Sebastian
Abel
Barnaby
Abram
Abraham
Bartholomew

I would urge you to put Albert on birth certificate just gives more options 😃. Plus Bertie is cute too more nn options!

Whatsyourflava · 24/04/2020 08:19

Albie is lovely and absolutely fine on the birth certificate! I think for our generation it might have been a bit casual but remember the next generation will be growing up with Alfie, Ronnie, Archie, Freddie, Toby etc (all are top 100 names on their own, not formal alternatives)
By the way I have a shortened version of a longer name on my birth certificate and I much prefer JR like that. Couldn’t be doing with having to explain “oh it’s short for X but I go by Y”. I just have one name - easy.

Whatsyourflava · 24/04/2020 08:19

Meant to tag you @MamaGothel

Whatsyourflava · 24/04/2020 08:20
  • it not JR!
RebeccaCloud9 · 24/04/2020 08:22

Albus is v cool! Cute for a baby and also works for an adult, and a distinguished old man too. Remember if it's Albie on its own, does it work as the only choice when he's a teenager, adult, middle aged, old?

Joffrey · 24/04/2020 08:24

I'd always choose a full name for the birth certificate. I don't like nicknamey names but it's personal choice obviously, congratulations!

Blursula · 24/04/2020 08:38

Just go with Albie! Much nicer than Albert and @Whatsyourflava is right - this generation will be full of diminutives.

My DC has a name that is just the shortened version on the BC because I knew I didn’t really like the long version. It really doesn’t matter, and people REALLY won’t care! He’s not going to be less likely to be successful or get a job or be a top judge or whatever just because you called him Albie and not Albert.
