I'm having a boy but struggling to find a name that isn't too common or too 'out there'. I'm a teacher so would like a name I'm not too likely to teach, but until now have spent most of my time in schools where most families speak other languages so am not too sure on the trends. I love Noah but know that that is very popular at the moment. Other options are Seb (Sebastian) and Jude.

Noah Sebastian Jude are all really lovely names.
If you’d like something underused but not weird how about a name like Peter
Or Christopher (nn Kit). Hardly used now but really nice.

Here are some other suggestions that hopefully fit your criteria:

Christopher nn Kit
Wilf(red) nn Wilf
Barnaby nn Barns or Barney
Nathan/Nathaniel nn Nate
Sidney nn Sid
Stanley
Laurence nn Laurie
Vincent nn Vinnie
Eli
Ellis
Miles / Milo
Seth
Cole
Otis
Eric
Casper
Rudy/Rudi
Dexter
Blake
Angus
Dominic
Chester
Caleb
Marley
Austin
Tristan
Otto

I second Christopher. Great name.

Noah Sebastian and Jude are always suggested on here which makes me think of them as quite popular trends.

How about
Saul
Joel
Caleb
Callum
Matthew
Nicholas
Benjamin
Toby

BlossomGem · 23/04/2020 13:44

Thanks. I quite like Toby and Rudy too.

I do love Finlay/Finn but thought there were a lot of boys with that name? Or is it becoming less common?

Silas
Otis

Christopher is indeed a nice name but Kit is rapidily rising in popularity at the moment. The total number of babies with that name is still not great, but there is definitely a fast-growing trend:

As previous poster said, Jude and Sebastian are also increasingly popular - much more than Kit:

Finley/Finlay peaked a few years ago: names.darkgreener.com/#finley

I like Jude, not keen on Noah. They are both names that I associate with the 1990s. Not keen on Sebastian either. Rudolph is good. Rupert? Tobias?

BlossomGem · 23/04/2020 20:31

Tobias/Toby is now on the list, thanks.

You’re unlikely to come any babies with 1970s names at the moment.

Stephen
Peter
Graham
Simon
Matthew
Jonathan
Nicholas
Paul
Philip

Those 1970s names are all current for babies I know now.
