Alberta

We are looking for something feminine but strong and not popular (outside of top 100). Any similar suggestions would be helpful too.

I love it. It was my grandmother’s name and is my daughter’s middle name

elfran · 23/04/2020 10:23

I suspect you'll get some negative opinions on it here as MN seems to dislike feminised versions of male names.

I've surprised myself by quite liking Alberta - to me, I don't think of Albert-with-an-a, but of the Canadian province (note, I am Canadian!) which is one of the most beautiful places in Canada, if not the world. Feels wild and strong to me.

Also gives you the potential nickname Alba, which is lovely and preferable (to me) than Bertie.

PeonyGrower · 23/04/2020 10:32

Thanks both that is helpful. I like it too, I think it sounds softer than Albert (with an a stick on and it is a name in its own right) and lots of nn options. Ps I love Canada @elfran

I really don’t like it. The name makes me think of a Miss Trunchbull-esque woman.
I don’t like Albert either

babynamelover · 23/04/2020 10:38

It's okay I think I prefer Albertine to Alberta 😃.

WendyDarling888 · 23/04/2020 10:55

Not my cup of tea OP. I wouldn't want to be called Alberta (sorry).

MrsJoshNavidi · 23/04/2020 11:01

I like it, although I prefer Roberta.

Whatsyourflava · 23/04/2020 11:13

Not my cup of tea either
I’d hate it if it were my name

How about Theodora or Aurora nn Rory?

MikeUniformMike · 23/04/2020 11:29

I know one, and it suits her. It's nice as it's her name.

LotusClover · 23/04/2020 11:33

I second @Whatsyourflava. Not a fan of Alberta but Aurora is nice.

AnaphylacticAnnabelle · 23/04/2020 11:35

No in my view.

It's not very feminine or elegant.

BadgeronaMoped · 23/04/2020 11:40

It does make me think of Canada, also the potential for the nickname Bert would put me off a little. PP's suggestion of Albertine is lovely though, although perhaps less 'strong' sounding.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 23/04/2020 12:08

I don't like, sorry. It's just Albert with an A on the end. It's not what I'd call feminine. Don't get me wrong, some male names you can add an A, Y, Ina, Ella to make them pretty. I do nt think Albert is one of them though.
Ideas for strong feminine names (not in the top 100)
Anastasia. Mariella. Melissa. Vanessa. Claudia. Harriet. Briony. Vivienne
Natalia.Gabriella. Helena. Teresa. Miriam.

toughgetsgoing · 23/04/2020 12:15

Doubt your dd will like it, put it as a mn

custardbear · 23/04/2020 12:19

It's quite masculine even though it has an A on the end. As others have said Albertine sounds more feminine - Aurora is lovely too

What Nn were you thinking (if any) as I'd be inclined to consider this too as people often shorten nAmes

Floralnomad · 23/04/2020 12:21

Definitely not feminine or elegant and there is a reason it’s not popular .

AmelieTaylor · 23/04/2020 12:25

I don't like it (sorry) as a name - it sounds chunky & dull.

...but that aside, I don't like place names for humans.

Modestandatinybitsexy · 23/04/2020 12:41

I prefer just Alba as the nickname of Bertie is just too tempting.

pilates · 23/04/2020 12:44

Beautiful ❤️

Shockers · 23/04/2020 12:45

I much prefer Alberta to Albertine. It’s not ever going to be a favourite of mine though. Sorry.

17caterpillars1mouse · 23/04/2020 12:46

Beautiful name and Albie or Bertie would make lovely nicknames. Alberta nn Albie is pretty cool

LimpidPools · 23/04/2020 12:48

It was named after one of Queen Victoria's daughters, AmelieTaylor. So it's not a place name for a human, it's a human name for a place.

I think I quite like it. And it has enough scope for your daughter to make it her own with a nickname if she grows up wanting to.
