How popular are these names?

I'm having a boy and really struggling with names. I don't want something that's too popular but at the same time not something that's totally out there either. I prefer simpler sounding names for boys and trying to avoid the letters B & J. So far I quite like the following 3 but wanted to get an idea of how common they are?

Rory
Ralph
Zavier

I think Rory is possibly my favourite but I've got a feeling it's becoming quite a common name now?

Rory is fairly popular. There are Scottish and Irish versions, which are spelt and possibly pronounced slightly differently.

I don't like Ralph, however you say it. You could spell it Ralf or Rafe, but I still don't like it, sorry.

Zavier is Xavier misspelt, and for some reasons MN seems to think it is pronounced the Spanish way. I'd say it Zavier to rhyme with Saviour.
I's gladly use it as a middle name.

Rory Xavier is nice and if he was one of two or three, he could be Rory X.

Jilljams · 19/04/2020 15:28

I think Rory is fairly popular, I know 3 under 3.

NuffSaidSam · 19/04/2020 15:28

Rory 1,323 babies 47th
Ralph 719 babies 88th
Zavier 29 babies 985th
Xavier 232 babies 224th

That's for England and Wales 2018....couldn't find 2019 stats.

jaoler · 19/04/2020 15:44

Rory is common which would put me off using it but I LOVE it!

Ralph and Zavier are unusual to me!

Orphlids · 19/04/2020 16:20

I know so many Rorys. I know a couple of Ralphs too, but pronounced incorrectly (Ralf), so you could make it more unusual by pronouncing it correctly.

adelaya · 19/04/2020 16:21

Ralph is slang for a penis

Sorbet18 · 19/04/2020 16:23

Thanks, I had a feeling Rory was about no 50 in last year's top 100. But as I haven't been to any baby groups or anything yet I wasn't really sure how popular it was. I've also seen a few Ralphs being announced on social media so don't know if that's rising in popularity too.

I still quite like Zavier (pronounced as Saviour with a Z) but don't know if it sounds a little posh! We live in an area that's not very prosperous but we are quite well spoken so wouldn't want him to be a target for bullies for that reason.

Zavier is surely a misspelling? I'd assume you had spelled Xavier wrongly, and my phone autocorrected it too.

They all seem fairly common to me, but I live in a posh area.

Lazydaisydaydream · 19/04/2020 16:26

Sorry.... What's the correct pronunciation for Ralph? I would have always said Ralf Blush

Rory is high on our list, but the popularity does put me off a bit as there are quite a few in the baby groups I've been to. Baby names do seem to be regional though so there must be some areas where there aren't any.

Government name stats for 2019 are not yet published for England and Wales.
OP - and anyone else wondering about name popularity - you might find this site useful. It is based on government figures (as very helpfully provided by NuffSaid above) - but it also shows trends in naming over approx the past 25 years names.darkgreener.com/

emilybrontescorsett · 19/04/2020 17:51

I know one Zavier and one Rory.
I like Ralph, pronounced Rafe, best.

Sorbet18 · 19/04/2020 17:52

If I used Zavier I'd spell it with a Z like Saviour but with a Z as I think it's easier to pronounce in English plus I have a very British surname, fair hair etc. Yea I guess Ralph would be pronounced like Ralf, I suppose like the clothing brand if you're familiar with it.
I think I'd just got the top 100 from bounty last year to give me a rough idea on popularity

I think almost everyone knows that X at the beginning of a word is pronounced Z, like in xylophone. I think most people would know how to pronounce Xavier. If you think it's a real problem though I wouldn't use it rather than butcher the spelling.

Stick with Ralph or Rory.

Sorbet18 · 19/04/2020 18:13

I only knew one other Xavier and that was pronounced like Hav-ee-ay (but in a strong french accent)!
I do know one other Zavier and his name is also pronounced like saviour with Z which was what made me more inclined to that spelling.

DS is Ralph hes 7 nearly 8. Only met one other Ralph since he was born. Pronounced Ralf, hate the Rafe way.
