I like the name Nolan but am aware there are different ways to pronounce it. What's the most common? Don't want him to have to correct people his whole life!

Ask one of the Sisters.

Nomoreweeping · 15/04/2020 21:53

I'd say No-lun.

DramaAlpaca · 15/04/2020 21:54

I can't think of any way to pronounce Nolan other than NO-lun.

Lucked · 15/04/2020 21:54

I only know of the pronunciation like ‘The Nolan’s’

no-lan

Londubh · 15/04/2020 21:54

It’s a common Irish surname, and I’ve never come across anyone who pronounced it in any way other than NO-lan. To rhyme with ‘go man’.

BuffaloCauliflower · 15/04/2020 21:55

No-lun. How else Wouk you say it?

cabbageking · 15/04/2020 21:59

The Nolan principles are probably the best known pronunciation.
Same as the Nolan sisters.

No- lan.

123Dancewithme · 15/04/2020 22:11

I would say NO-lun

Elly88 · 15/04/2020 22:11

Thanks! That's how I would say it too, I've come across no-lan, no-lun, noel-lun and other interesting Irish versions 🤣 perhaps it depends on dialect?!

It will depend on your accent a bit - for me, it is somewhere between an 'a' and 'u' sound in 'No-Lan /Lun'

However, it sounds like a surname to me, so I wouldn't use it.

Theukisgreatt · 15/04/2020 22:25

The Nolan sisters no-lan @cabbaking? Since when?

cabbageking · 15/04/2020 22:54

They were always the Nolans?

Trinpy · 15/04/2020 22:58

The one I know pronounces it No-lan. However it is pretty bad as a first name imo, there are much, much nicer names out there.

Theukisgreatt · 15/04/2020 23:03

As in Coleen Nolan? The group were time. Coleen No-lun... have to watch something old now to see if I've just convinced myself all these years!

Theukisgreatt · 15/04/2020 23:06

She says No-lun.

MissMarks · 15/04/2020 23:09

No Lan. Not fussed on it as a first name- it is a very common surname in Ireland.

87Callista · 16/04/2020 00:32

No-Ln (the L and N run into each other)

BrighamSinclair · 16/04/2020 12:50

If you name your child Nolan he will spend the rest of his life with people asking him if he is in the mood for dancing. Please don’t.

Windyatthebeach · 16/04/2020 19:08

Zammo..
Just say no (lan)!!!

JohnFinlaysNewTeeth · 16/04/2020 19:09

Lun / Lan would likely be regional / dialect dependant anyway. Surely the people saying Noel-Lan are taking the piss?

HarrietM87 · 17/04/2020 15:57

It’s an Irish surname...do you have any connections to it? I find it so weird that Irish surnames have got really popular as first names in England. It’s like calling a child Smith when it’s not a family name.

GlamGiraffe · 17/04/2020 15:59

NO-lun. But it's a surname to me
