What do you think about Harlan?

Trying to come up with baby boy names, and really struggling!

Older sibling is Lauchlan, and we also love Rory but can't use due to close friends having used it.
I'd like a known name for ease of pronounciation, but something a bit different.

For girl names we like classic names but a bit different? Nina is current favourite, also like Lucia / Lucy but again, wouldn't use due to close friends using it.

I just saw Harlan on a list of names from the twenties due a comeback, and thought it was quite strong, easy to pronounce, different, but also easy to use Harry as nn? I'd be interested to hear what you guys think! Or very open to any other suggestions...

It’s pretty redneck, OP.

Ingridla · 13/04/2020 20:28

Hector is cool?

Bananaman123 · 13/04/2020 20:29

Literally watching Justified right now, based in Harlan county, Kentucky. Dont mind it as a name and would shorten to Harly

JKScot4 · 13/04/2020 20:41

@banana
Snap, me too!
Season 5
🤣🤣

crabette · 13/04/2020 20:44

@Ingridla oooooh I actually really like Hector?! Will run past DH!

Hector is ace

Harlan is awful

Nina is fabulous

Letthemysterybe · 13/04/2020 20:51

Hector is cool!

Bananasandchocolatecustard · 13/04/2020 20:52

Reminds me of the shipyard (Harland & Wolfe).

Tezza1 · 13/04/2020 20:54

I would think of Harlan County in the TV series "Justified." Shudder.

Although I do like Harlan Coben, especially his earlier books.

Crookshanksthecat · 13/04/2020 21:12

Other possible names:
Hamish
Jude
Rafferty
Monty
Felix
Jasper
Xavier
Otis
Kit
Heath
Cillian

hellosunshine5 · 13/04/2020 21:23

I like it!

I agree with PP that it doesn’t really go with Lauchlan though...

I know someone in Oz that recently had a Henley which I quite liked too, if you’re looking for H name suggestions Smile

I also know brothers Lauchlan and Angus which I think go nicely together.

Hope that helps!

Darkbendis · 13/04/2020 22:35

How about Hamish? Scottish and goes with Lachlan/Lauchlan

crabette · 13/04/2020 22:43

I like Hamish - but I think I'd only consider it because I'm thinking about it next to Lauchlan? And I should have said Lauchlan is my stepson - I love him and his name, but didn't choose it. So would like something that doesn't clash, but don't want to feel restricted to a Scottish name - while it would be nice!

OP posts:
LarkDescending · 13/04/2020 23:27

I don’t like Harlan.

Hamish is nice. How about Magnus, Marcus or Rupert?

Astronica · 14/04/2020 03:16

I don't like Harlan. Just Harry is good though.

I like Hector and Hamish.

DramaAlpaca · 14/04/2020 03:23

Not keen on Harlan. Hector - no, think of the meaning of the verb. Hectoring someone isn't exactly positive. Hamish is good, I like it.

LoveIsLovely · 14/04/2020 03:39

Awful but I am not a fan of faddy made up names in general

YinMnBlue · 14/04/2020 04:07

Not two names ending in ‘Lan’, sounds naff.

ShowOfHands · 14/04/2020 09:27

I love Hector. I have a Raphael but we considered

Abraham (Bram)
Josiah
Silas
Amos
Taliesin
Patrick (Patch)
Roscoe
Barnaby

Tezza1 · 14/04/2020 11:31

The original Hector from the Trojan War was a wonderful character.

Girlinajumpsuit · 14/04/2020 14:40

I love it! Currently top of my list for baby due in June. My only concern is that it's the kind of name people will have strong opinions on, which I'm not sure I can face! I think it has a nice sound to it though and is a strong name. I also dont get the dislike when it sounds VERY similar to Arlo, which is extremely popular, and is not a made up name but just one that has gone out of fashion.
