Is it weird to use a Welsh name if you have no Welsh connection

Like the name Griff but we are in Scotland with no Welsh family. Would it be odd?

We are English and used an Irish name just because I loved it. I don't think it's odd.. It's just a name

MikeUniformMike · 10/04/2020 20:01

I was going to say something not very complimentary, but Griff is fine. I'd make it Griffith on the bc.

Whatsyourflava · 10/04/2020 20:05

Griff is lovely. Use it

PlayingGrownUp · 10/04/2020 20:11

Obviously not the same but we have a Welsh name for our dog (we don’t have any kids) because I went to university in Wales and loved the name.

phoenixrosehere · 10/04/2020 20:13

Not odd at all.

I used to research and write name meanings for a company in my early 20s and so many names are variations of one central one and only a change of a few letters make them seen as a (insert country) name. Griff is absolutely fine.

missmouse101 · 10/04/2020 20:16

If you like a name, you like a name! No problem.

CaffiSaliMali · 10/04/2020 20:19

I think it depends on the name. Griff is lovely, and an anglicisation of Gruff.

A Welsh name like Megan or Owen is very different to a Welsh name like Esyllt, Gwenllian or Llyr or Ynyr.

Griff is fine and is a lovely name.

General advice to anyone using a name from a different culture/language is to make sure you have checked the name.

Pretty much every Welsh name thread on here has several common mistakes like Bronwyn instead of Bronwen (names ending in wen are feminine, in wyn, masculine), but Bronwyn isn't a name at all.

Same with Olwyn instead of Olwen. Olwyn isn't a name, it is the Welsh word for wheel.

Littlewinterrobin · 10/04/2020 20:20

The Welsh name is Gruff, not Griff. Short for Gruffydd.

LittleBoyJuly2020 · 10/04/2020 20:22

I'm using Owen and we have no Welsh connection

IncognitoIsMyFavouriteWord · 10/04/2020 20:33

I live in Yorkshire. I have a Spanish name. We have no Spanish in our family at all. 😁

Makinglists · 10/04/2020 20:36

We have used Scottish names have a very, very tenuous link (great grand parent)

MikeUniformMike · 10/04/2020 21:12

I know a few welsh Griffs, Gruffudd on the bc. Some spell it Gruff, some Griff. It's quite popular in Wales but has been used regularly.

Agree with Caffi. I'd also be wary of using dated names (cf. Italian babies called Kevin).

Of Caff's list - Ynyr is quite easy to say once you know how (UN-irr, irr like in irrelevant).

CaffiSaliMali · 10/04/2020 21:23

I would have been Ynyr if a boy Mike, as a child I was convinced it was Un Ear, as that was what Dad thought it was Grin

Fortunately I was a girl and Dad can pronounce my name!

MikeUniformMike · 10/04/2020 21:48

I know one and he gets called In-near. I know an Einir and people call her Enn-ear. No amount of correcting works. They just can't hear it.

Emyr is nicer than Ynyr. Like both.

The sort of names that aren't suggested on welsh baby name threads.

sawyersfishbiscuits · 10/04/2020 21:51

I know a Griffin if that helps. You could call him Griff for short or like this little one gets called 'Finny'. Not a Welsh thing. I don't think I'd worry about it anyway. I'd be a bit Hmmif it was something like Myfanwy...? But tbh don't worry what people think. Griff is a great name

Blursula · 11/04/2020 00:06

Go for it. The world would be a very boring place if we all had names from where we were from!

Staffori · 11/04/2020 01:56

How awful would it be if we couldn't use a name we love because it's from another country or culture? Did you know that Liam is one of the most popular boys' names in the USA?

I say go for it.

LilacTree1 · 11/04/2020 02:06

Go for it.

hoping2018 · 11/04/2020 22:34

I've met a griff with no welsh connection - I did ask what the welsh connection was(!) so be ready for that question but it didn't bother me there wasn't one!

bridgetreilly · 12/04/2020 00:07

I'd call him Griffin, nn Griff, personally.
