Florus for a boy? What do you think?

I don,t dilike it, but it sounds quite feminine. If you like it why not.

SelfIsolationMeansMorePeppa · 10/04/2020 17:11

I'm not keen either sorry.
I agree it sounds quite feminine.

franke · 10/04/2020 17:13

I've never heard of it. I know a couple of boys/men called Florian. It's quite popular in Germany.

ChikiTIKI · 10/04/2020 17:15

Sounds kind of like an infection, sorry I'm not keen.

MrsJoshNavidi · 10/04/2020 17:17

Awful. The feminine Flora is nice, but I don't think there's been a Florus in the U.K. since the Romans left.

Rayagoldensun · 10/04/2020 17:20

Are you in the UK? I’d be concerned about teasing - Flora marg, flower etc. I love Flora for a girl but Florus sounds a bit feminine.

Holdingmybreath · 10/04/2020 17:20

If you can guarantee he'll be tall, dark and broodingly handsome go a head.If not strre clear.

YouJustDoYou · 10/04/2020 17:22

If you want him to be bullied horrifically...go for it.

FiveFootTwoEyesOfBlue · 10/04/2020 17:22

I also prefer Florian. Florus sounds like a medicine. Or a garden fertilizer.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 10/04/2020 17:23

It’s no less feminine sounding that Floris that you asked for opinions on the other day. There are 1000s of lovely names out there. It’s only one less sound a way from Florist.

MrsEricBana · 10/04/2020 17:24

Not for me sorry. Florian ok.

PeskyRooks · 10/04/2020 17:30

Just asked ds12 if he would like to be called Florus.
It's a no from him.

SirDucky · 10/04/2020 17:47

Did you just make that up, what about Fungus?

Permanantlypuzzled · 10/04/2020 17:57

I knew somebody years ago called Nonus . Never heard of another.

Thisismytimetoshine · 10/04/2020 18:01

We've just had a thread about this; spelt Floris Confused Are you the same op? If you are, the spelling makes zero difference...

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 10/04/2020 18:20

Nonus.!!!. ConfusedSounds like bleeding Nonce.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 10/04/2020 18:23

Sounds like a minor character in a Shrek film

ncqtime · 10/04/2020 18:35

I'm stumped as to what it makes me think of. If I was a child looking to bully I'd go straight to 'penis'.

ThanosSavedMe · 10/04/2020 18:37

Reminds me of the song Boy Named Sue

LouLouLoo · 10/04/2020 18:39

Faunus for any future sibling?

Sorry OP but it’s awful.

TeaMilkNoSugarThanks · 10/04/2020 18:42

No, Florus is actually worse than Floris.

And, before you ask, Floras is also not great, and neither is Flores.

BikeRunSki · 10/04/2020 18:42

Was it you who was posting about “Floris” a few days ago?

I’d say that “Florian” is the most mainstream male “Flo” name in English speaking countries.

Floyd?

browzingss · 10/04/2020 18:44

It sounds like a cleaning product

florascotia2 · 10/04/2020 18:58

OP As I'm sure you know, Florus was an ancient Roman cognomen (nickname that became hereditary, almost like a surname). It means 'flowery', which many people might not think of as masculine - though of course many expert gardeners are men. It became the basis of several male names that have been used in Europe, though not usually in the UK, where the root Latin word - Flos - has become very closely associated with the female names Flora and Florence.

As well as Floris, already discussed, there are male names Florent, Florentin, Florian, Florianus, Florin... Florian is probably the best known.

Florian is rather a nice name; so is Florent.

TwilightPeace · 10/04/2020 18:59

Please don’t.
