Ooh they’re all pretty awful, but Carmen’s ok and I love Magnus (had such a crush on a very handsome Norwegian called Magnus at uni, that may be why Blush )

Orphlids · 08/04/2020 17:29

I have a son called Magnus, and I can honestly say his name brings me such immense, disproportionate happiness - I am so glad we chose it. It is generally extremely well received, if that’s important to you. Never met another. From your girl’s list, I do adore Lennox. I love the rather masculine sound, but I picture a very beautiful woman. I also love Carmen. And Vita is wonderful!

Spied · 08/04/2020 17:31

Love Carmen. I wanted that for dd but dp hates it.
I love Bramwell too but feel like I'd need to be real brave to use it.

VisionQuest · 08/04/2020 18:06

Wow, some very curious names in that list!!

However, I'd go Bramwell and Freda

I don't like any of the girls names, I'm afraid.

I do really love Eric and Bill

MikeUniformMike · 08/04/2020 20:22

Carmen and Carmel are nice.

Isn't Bramwell an own brand pickle or something?
Cedric has a certain quirkiness. Might be a cute name for a pet snail.
Rupert is quite a nice name for a bear.
Bruno- yes
Idris - pop
Magnus - yes
Bill (does it havvve to be William) Just Bill is fine, but could be short for Willem or Wilhelm, Wilburt or Wilfred.
Eric - fine
Roger - fine.

Umnoway · 09/04/2020 14:30

Rupert is lovely but I don’t like any of the other names at all.

I’d use Frida after Frida Kahlo quite gladly.

Mish85 · 11/04/2020 01:35

Vita Lenore and
Rupert Bramwell my favs

Wolfgirrl · 11/04/2020 01:44

Crikey what a list!

Freda - okay
Beryl - very old lady
Lenore - fabric softener
Carmen - car-men
Carmel - caramel
Lennox - sounds like a mans name
Vita - breakfast biscuits

Bramwell - haunted doll
Rupert- the bear
Bruno - sacha baron cohen
Cedric - diggory
Idris - elba
Magnus- hard to live up to
Bill (does it havvve to be William) - and ben the flower pot men
Eric - okay
Roger - cruel

So my vote would be Freda and Eric 😊

Staffori · 11/04/2020 01:50

I love Bruno. I quite like Frieda, rather than Freda, but I don't think any of them combine well with any other. Sorry.

NotNowPlzz · 11/04/2020 06:28

@AuntyAnna I checked out your blog. Love it! I read through your posts and found some new names to add.

Sullivan
Barnaby
Ignatius
Sylvan

Juno
Ramona
Honor
Juniper

In order:
Freda - I do like this
Beryl - I quite like this
Vita - I really don't like any of the others
Carmen
Carmel
Lenore - fabric conditioner
Lennox - you want to name your daughter after a heavyweight boxer?

In order:
Eric
Magnus
Idris
Rupert
Bramwell - fun nod to the Brontes, although he was a violent drunk, so
Bruno
Bill - I would give him William because it gives him more choices later
Cedric

In general, your boy names are much better than your girl name.
Roger

bridgetreilly · 11/04/2020 08:20

Barnaby - cute, good choice
Ignatius - super pretentious
Sullivan - surname. Shortens to 'sully' which is not a nice word, look it up.
Sylvan - pretentious unless you're French

Honor - gorgeous. Much the nicest of all the names you've mentioned
Ramona - has a very particular trendy vibe, but not bad
Juniper - a bit pretentious
Juno - a lot pretentious

CaffiSaliMali · 11/04/2020 08:40

Magnus and Idris are lovely. I know someone with a baby Magnus and really like it - it's strong, unusual but not made-up.

Idris is a nice Welsh name which can also be short for the Muslim name Idrissa.

Of your girls names Vita and Juniper are nice. Our tastes in girls names are very different though, but those are my favourites from your list. Objectively Carmen and Carmel are fine, I just don't like Cara, Carla, Clara, Carly etc. and they both have that 'Car' sound. My exception to that is Carlotta, which I like due to the St Clares books.

emilybrontescorsett · 11/04/2020 09:09

I only like Bramwell.
At a push id go with Carmen from your girls list.

Wolfgirrl · 11/04/2020 11:21

If I'm being honest I think the second batch are all really pretentious Blush

Would you honest be okay with being called Beryl or Ignatius..?

I think this is one of those cases where parents give their kids names they wouldn't really want themselves but because they embody what they want the child to be, e.g. posh, unique and eccentric.

I think Freda is the only nice one.

Keyperfect · 11/04/2020 11:26

Carmen and Eric

NotNowPlzz · 11/04/2020 20:33

Sorry to dripfeed but re comments about pretentiousness. We're not in the UK but in the Caribbean and a lot of names are from literature, ancient Greece, saints etc here.

For example we know...
Valentina
Titus (many of these)
Clio
Ulysses
Bibiana
Virgil
Severus
Ambrose
Erasmus
Adonis
Anatole
Cleopatra
Apollonia
Demetrius
Etc

These are all adults and no one blinks an eye. So that changes the context and I should have mentioned it.

Wolfgirrl · 11/04/2020 21:04

Oh I see! My main opposition to names considered 'wacky' is that the kids will be picked on at school, but it sounds like unusual names are the norm where you are. How about:

Athena
Hera
Demeter (could shorted to Demi, which I love!)
Olympia
Atlas
Helios

bridgetreilly · 11/04/2020 21:41

So... opinions of people mostly based in the UK not that helpful then. Great.
