Thanks!

Neither are posh. Oliver is mainstream and classic.
Sebastian and Hugo are sliding down the classes.

SylvanianFrenemies · 07/04/2020 14:08

Hugo. Not keen on either tbh.

Sebastian still has posh connotations too!

Pishposhpashy · 07/04/2020 14:08

Hugo by a million miles.

Waterandlemonjuice · 07/04/2020 14:09

Hugo, Oliver is quite well known and not posh imo

skintbutok · 07/04/2020 14:12

Hugo reminds me of that toddler in the monkey on the car video.

AnnUumellemahaye · 07/04/2020 14:13

Why are you all suggesting names that are posher than Hugo? The OP asked which was poshest and most pretentious. If she's using the word pretentious I imagine she doesn't want a name that sounds posh. No-one seeks to be pretentious, surely?

Jojobythesea · 07/04/2020 14:14

My son had five Oliver's in his class at primary and four Olivia's. Hugo is definitely less common/popular and more posh sounding I think. 🤔

MinorArcana · 07/04/2020 14:17

Oliver is a very ordinary name right now, it’s been the most popular boys name in England and Wales for the last several years.
People will be too familiar with it to consider it posh.

So I’d say Hugo sounds more posh.

CheriLittlebottom · 07/04/2020 14:18

Hugo; Oliver is very mainstream now. Hugo is still a bit posh, but neither are pretentious.

Jago is similar (and lovely!) and has more of a posh feeling to it, I would say.

Princesspickle777 · 07/04/2020 14:18

Neither of them, I know plenty of Hugo’s that aren’t ‘posh’ and Oliver is just as common.

CheriLittlebottom · 07/04/2020 14:19

Sebastian is less posh than Hugo, for definite. Have come across a fair number of little Sebs.

Frankenheimer · 07/04/2020 14:23

Hugo.

Are you trying to avoid poshness and pretension, OP, or are you aiming for it?! Just wondering why you're asking Grin

catinb0oots · 07/04/2020 14:25

We've got a Hugo and we're neither posh or pretentious

emmathedilemma · 07/04/2020 15:20

Hugo by quite a long way

BillieEilish · 07/04/2020 15:24

Hugo is two a penny in Spain and France, not posh at all. Oliver very common. DD has 3 in her class.
Both normal, nice names but neither pretentious or posh IMO.

Umnoway · 08/04/2020 09:43

Hugo. I think Oliver is quite class free really, it’s used by people from all walks of life. Hugo just wouldn’t fit in on a council estate Grin.

Hugo, although I wouldn't call it posh, but more so than Oliver.

Slychomping · 08/04/2020 11:55

Oliver is not that posh is it? And I think Ludo has overtaken Hugo in the poshness stakes.

ShowOfHands · 08/04/2020 12:01

Love the name Hugo. It's less likely to crop up across a societal spectrum. Olivers are legion.

I know a couple of extremely upper class families and they use names like Lucy, Molly, Catherine, James, Johnny etc. Never Peregrine or Ludmilla.

I do know a fairly posh family with children called, amongst other names, Tancred and Hepzhibah. They're lovely but a bit bonkers.

GinnyStrupac · 08/04/2020 12:05

It depends on the accent of the person saying it, surely?

Saffzy · 08/04/2020 12:08

Hugo posher. Like someone else said, Oliver seems to be seen as posher in adults rather than children.

islandislandisland · 08/04/2020 12:13

Hugo

Whatsyourflava · 08/04/2020 12:15

Neither are posh. Both are lovely names

Orphlids · 08/04/2020 12:21

In Essex, Hugo has become very popular with people who are definitely not posh, but they pronounce it “Yoo-go”. The name is still posher than Oliver.
