Eleanora and Theodora but known as Ellie and Theo? Full names are rarely ever used together.

I prefer Nora and Dora! Very cute

MotherOfAllNameChanges · 07/04/2020 08:05

Are they twins?

MairzyDoats · 07/04/2020 08:06

Not really similar at all? I also think Nora and Dora is adorable but they probably won't like it when they're older!

TheVanguardSix · 07/04/2020 08:06

Thea not Theo, OP.

AmelieTaylor · 07/04/2020 08:10

Yes, especially if they’re twins, they’re too similar. You’ll need to use full names for registering for lots of things.

If you intend to use their shirtened names anyway, how about Elouise)

AmelieTaylor · 07/04/2020 08:12

& yes,Thea is better for a girl than Theo which is traditionally for a boy.

PancakePattie · 07/04/2020 08:21

I don't think the two are too similar to use together if you're going to shorten them. But Theo is definitely a boys name. It has to be Thea I think.

CatteStreet · 07/04/2020 08:27

Why not Eleanor and Theodora? Then they don't rhyme, the rhythm's different. (I have to also say I am not at all keen on Ellie as a shortening and think if I were Eleonora being called Ellie day to day I would think my sister Theo/dora had got the better deal)

difficulttod · 07/04/2020 08:34

DD is Eleanora, she’s 4. Always known as Ellie. DP really likes Theodora/Theo, doesn’t like Thea or Dora.

Verily1 · 07/04/2020 08:40

Theo is a boys name

TeacupDrama · 07/04/2020 08:42

Theo is generally the shortening of Theodore which is considered a boy's name by 98% of the population

PleaseStopCrying · 07/04/2020 08:43

If you already have an Eleanora then I wouldn't use Theodora. She may be Ellie now but what if she chooses Nora later? Also agree with all those saying Theo is a masculine name and everyone will logically assume she is a boy if you insist on calling her Theo.

Forgetaboutme · 07/04/2020 08:45

Neither are particularly my taste but I do think they are fine together and although similar, it won't matter if they are known by their nicknames anyway. I see no problem with using the nickname Theo on a girl. Lots of shortened girls names to nicknames made traditonally male names. Its not an issue and if your daughter didn't like it theres other names she can go by when older.

Camopetals · 07/04/2020 08:45

You can't always control nicknames, it's nailed on she'll get Thea or Dora as Theo isn't normally used for a girl.

BubblesBuddy · 07/04/2020 08:48

I’d be amazed if any child chose to be called Nora by choice.

You could consider Dorothea or Leonora.

PleaseStopCrying · 07/04/2020 08:59

I’d be amazed if any child chose to be called Nora by choice.

I wouldn't bet on this. I've taught several girls called Eleanora and 2 of them went from being Ellie to Nora as there are millions of Ellie's, Elle's, Ella's and Emily's etc in their cohorts and they got fed up of their names all blending into one.

difficulttod · 07/04/2020 09:00

Theo is a valid girls name if you google it. I just wanted to know if the full names are too similar for siblings that aren’t twins.

OP posts:
MikeUniformMike · 07/04/2020 09:03

@BubblesBuddy, Leonora as a sister for Eleanora?

PleaseStopCrying · 07/04/2020 09:05

Theo is a valid girls name if you google it.

To be fair anything can be a valid name if you Google it. The fact still remains that everyone will assume she is a boy if her name is Theo and whilst that might not bother some children for some it will become very frustrating.

Personally like others have said I feel the names are much too similar and it seems really odd to deliberately give your daughter a masculine nickname.

BubblesBuddy · 07/04/2020 09:15

Oh I forgot about the sister issue! I just thought of similar names! In that case, back to the “Dora” suggestion. I think both Ellie and Thea are over used. When my DDs were at school, Emma, Ellie and Emily were very popular names. Several in each year group. I would choose something a bit less used.

(I guess I don’t like Nora as my DH always says “Nora Bone” as a joke! Not that’s he’s remotely funny of course)

MikeUniformMike · 07/04/2020 09:30

I just think Flamin' Nora. Dora's nicer.

Dorothea offers Dora or Thea, and Dorothy is lovely. Dottie is so cute.

CatteStreet · 07/04/2020 09:31

Oh, I was assuming these were twin names, sorry. Then I think Theodora would be too similar. I'd go for something with a different sound at the end. Imogen, Felicity, Damaris, Lilian? Dorothea would be OK too because the sounds at the end are different (-ea as opposed to -ora), but the overall 'feel' is still quite similar.

CatteStreet · 07/04/2020 09:32

There's Theo Dane in Ballet Shoes, but seeing as nobody's mentioned it so far, it doesn't seem to be much of a point of reference. I quite like Theo as a shortening for a girl and think introducing 'Theodora known as Theo' would be OK, but introducing 'Theo' would seem a bit odd.

CatteStreet · 07/04/2020 09:33

Yes, Eleonora/Ellie and Dorothea/Dottie work quite nicely together, as per a PP.

Sooverthemill · 07/04/2020 09:34

I think they are too 'matchy'
