Diana? Too old fashioned?

DD is due mid August. Me and DP love the name Diana but DP's parents think it sounds top old fashioned. Just want to scope it out a little and see how common that opinion is
Thanks

It’s a beautiful name and due a comeback.

The Princess association is strong, though, obviously.

TankGirl97 · 03/04/2020 15:47

Absolutely love it, great meaning too. I really pushed for it when choosing a name for dd but dh wasn't convinced. Hope you do use it.

THNG5 · 03/04/2020 15:49

One of my favourite names. Unfortunately, DH vetoed it so I'll never have a little Diana 😪

I love it too. Love the meaning and also being someone who loves comic book movies and fantasy in general, its Wonder Womans name and that of a Roman Goddess. If we have a DD2 it would be a contender.

CheriLittlebottom · 03/04/2020 15:52

I like it. Due a comeback. There's Princess Di obviously but to kids their reference will more likely be wonder woman.

SilverOtter · 03/04/2020 15:54

I love itSmile

Grace was associated with Grace Kelly for a long time. Would Princess Di mean much to someone born this year?

It's a beautiful name.

midwesteaster · 03/04/2020 16:01

I like the actual name, the princess link would put me off but I don't think it is old fashioned,

Whatsyourflava · 03/04/2020 16:05

I really like it but hate the nickname Di(e). As a result whole name just wreaks of death especially given association to Diana plus the shortening Die

💀

CheriLittlebottom · 03/04/2020 16:07

So shorten it to Ana? Or don't shorten it at all - you don't have to!

Whatsyourflava · 03/04/2020 16:17

Yes I know there’s no rule and I wanted to use “Diana” as it’s a much loved relative’s name but all the Diana’s I know (including her) had the name shortened to Di(e) whether they like it or not. Don’t regret not using it but I do like the full name @CheriLittlebottom

toastofthetown · 03/04/2020 18:39

I love Diana, but am not keen on the nickname Di. I'm not sure how inevitable the nickname would be, but I wouldn't risk it. Diana has been on an upward trajectory in popularity, so I don't think it will be seen as too old fashioned for long.

MikeUniformMike · 03/04/2020 19:04

Don't shorten it to Ana.
You could shorten it to Dinah in speech, or to Dee or even Dan.
Or make up a nn like Squidge or something.

midsomermurderess · 03/04/2020 21:13

The only Diana I know never had her name shortened to Di. Quite a few unrelated nicknames, but never Di. And certainly when she is young you can always just say, 'She's Diana' if anyone does so.

TheWordmeister · 03/04/2020 21:17

The risk of 'Di' would put me off, plus the association with Princess Diana.

FluffyEggsontoast · 03/04/2020 21:55

I don’t think it’s too old fashioned at all.
Personally I think its unusable though because of nickname Di(e), just couldn’t do it. You can try and police it but it’s the natural shortening and will be hard to stop it happening. Anna just doesn’t roll off the tongue and you’d have to say “my names Diana but nickname Anna” and by the time you’ve been through all that you might as well be “Anna” to make it easier

RuthW · 03/04/2020 22:30

It's lovely especially with Annie as a nn.

emptyplinth · 03/04/2020 22:33

Love it

Wakeupsunshine · 03/04/2020 22:33

It’s lovely and underused. I know two Dianas and they are never Di but the two Dianes I know are called Di.

SionnachRua · 03/04/2020 22:35

Love Diana, stunning name. I think it will lose the People's Princess association.

CheriLittlebottom · 03/04/2020 22:35

In my experience though people use their full name, not a nickname, outside of family. Unless it's a very common, accepted shortening, eg Sam for Samantha. My parents use a nickname form of my name but I don't use it anywhere else. She can just be Diana!

EasyTarget · 03/04/2020 22:36

Wonder Woman! Like it as a full name, don't like the nickname Di.

BBCONEANDTWO · 03/04/2020 22:36

I don't like the name but that is just my opinion.

TheOtherSideOfTheMountain · 03/04/2020 22:39

Like it, but the Dirty Diana association would really put me off
