Using the same name as a work colleague

Very random one and I will caveat this post with I know tastes in names change but this is more of a general debate...

Since my DH and I started talking seriously about having kids (few years ago) we often talk about what names we would give our children and have always come back to the same two names, without fail, for the last 3 years. I found out a few days ago that one of my work colleagues has a son with the same name that I'd absolutely love to call my future son (if I had one). We are planning on having kids next year. So this got me thinking about what peoples views were on this? Is it socially acceptable to call your child the same name as another work colleague or would it be strange?

Absolutely fine.

NuffSaidSam · 27/03/2020 21:05

It's absolutely and completely fine.

There aren't enough names to give every single child a unique one.

PlantPotting · 27/03/2020 21:16

Completely fine

It would be fine if you were actually about to give birth to a son.
At the moment, there are SO many ifs, buts, and maybes, it really isn't worth giving it headspace.

Just do it. That person is a co-worker, not a friend - they could resign tomorrow and you may never see them again. Wouldn’t you feel stupid for not using a name you love because of someone who is just a transient presence in your life?

Rachelhaydenberk1 · 28/03/2020 02:26

You say work colleague and not friend at work, so it doesn't sound like you are close at all. And people change jobs and life changes. This person probably wont remain in your life. So if you love a name, use it. Dont second guess it because an acquaintance used the same name. If it was a close friend, I could see questioning. But it doesn't sound like that is the case.

Is it really unusual - if it’s a particularly unique family name, or name from a culture you are not from, or a made up name, Or something like that then yeah it’s weird

If not, and it’s just a name out the top 100, it’s fine.

Of course it's fine. My DS has the same name as a colleague's DS and it doesn't matter. I'm pleased that I got there first, though Grin
