Oxana? Roxy is a bit stripper/puppy

Bezalelle · 23/03/2020 12:08

Strictly for Staffies, with brothers named Diesel.

DramaAlpaca · 23/03/2020 12:27

Totally a dog name. Sorry.

OhCaptain · 23/03/2020 12:32

Stripper or dog name.

Sorry!

Bringmewineandcake · 23/03/2020 12:32

I like it

GemmaTellerMorrow · 23/03/2020 12:37

Rooooooxannne, you don't have to put on the red light

Whatsyourflava · 23/03/2020 12:56

I think it’s a great name- one of my favourites! I’d pick Roxanne or Roxanna and nn Roxy. Please think carefully before mumsnet puts you off the name, mumsnet users are of all ages and classes but predominantly tend to be more “sensible” types (some may say boring). Names like Sonny and Hunter and Jackson get absolutely slated on mumsnet yet they’re top 100 names so clearly popular.

sibbys · 23/03/2020 14:28

@Whatsyourflava thank you :-) I kind of like the way people speak their mind om Mumsnet. I live in Denmark and it's nice to know what social class some names are considered in UK and US :-) If I really liked Roxy I would not ask - I would just name my child Roxy. But I'm struggling to find names to put on our list!

The UK is class conscious.
Some names make a statement about the social, cultural, educational and economic background of the parent(s).

What other names do you like, OP?

elp30 · 23/03/2020 14:50

A close friend adores Roxy Music so her daughter is called, "Roxy". I thought it was cute when she was a child and Roxy is 31 now and it still suits her.

I say, go for it!

Strugglingtodomybest · 23/03/2020 14:56

Strictly for Staffies, with brothers named Diesel.

Or Rocky!

Whoareyoudududu · 23/03/2020 15:17

Stripper or dogs name.

Wheresthebiffer2 · 23/03/2020 16:15

I think - big dog

Wheresthebiffer2 · 23/03/2020 16:17

I knew a girl Roxy whose full name was Roxburgh (like the castle in the Scottish Borders).

sibbys · 24/03/2020 07:43

@MikeUniformMike

The names I like (my partner doesn't like them):

Alice, Martha, Ivy, Uma, Saga, Matilda.

Whatsyourflava · 24/03/2020 07:57

Alice, Martha, Ivy and Matilda are SO SO gorgeous 😍😍

Whatsyourflava · 24/03/2020 07:58

If he doesn’t like Martha what about Marnie
Instead of Matilda what about Jemima? Or Imogen? Or Margaret (Maggie)?

MikeUniformMike · 24/03/2020 08:31

Hi sibbys,
Hope you are well this morning.

Alice, Martha, Ivy, Uma, Saga, Matilda.

Alice is lovely - classic, won't date, works in many countries.
Martha is nice. Will be pronounced Marta is Scandinavia, and it's still nice
Ivy - clingy climbing weed. Poison Ivy. No. Dislike.
Saga - ok but it's associated with the elderly in the UK. Probably No.
Matilda - it's so popular in the UK that it has lost its appeal.

Of your list, I would choose Alice.

Aren't there any pretty underused Danish names that would also work in the UK?

MikeUniformMike · 24/03/2020 08:45

Astrid is nice.
Other names I like: Ingrid, Inge

Over here names like Eve, Ava, Ellie, Olivia, Freya, Milly, Lily, Maia etc are very overused.

longwayoff · 24/03/2020 08:53

Roxy? Odeon? Coronet? ABC? Paramount? Cinemas of my youth. Don't do it.

floatygoat · 24/03/2020 08:54

I don't like it sorry.

GenxfeellikeaBoomer · 24/03/2020 11:15

Awful.

GenxfeellikeaBoomer · 24/03/2020 11:16

Whay about Beatrix with Trixy for short

Flymetothestars · 24/03/2020 12:08

@sibbys

Just wanted to say that Alice, Martha, Ivy and Matilda are all such gorgeous names 😍

MikeUniformMike · 24/03/2020 20:15

Asterix would be timely.
