Irene?

Too old fashioned or due a revival? Disclaimer, not currently pregnant but it's the name of a family member and I think it could be sweet on a baby

Sorry it's hideous

Cornettoninja · 13/03/2020 16:23

I imagine it would soon suit a baby in their own right but in black and white it just makes me think of an Australian woman in her 60’s

Brunelofbrio · 13/03/2020 16:23

I know a 3 year old Irene. Sorry I did a double take. For me it’s not quite old enough for a revival. But then my grandparents were Gladys and Bill... Irene is my parents generation

FluffyEggsontoast · 13/03/2020 16:25

Hmm not one of my favourites and definitely showing no signs of revival at the moment, it’s outside the top 1,700 names and falling

Just don’t really like the sound of it

saltedtortillachips · 13/03/2020 16:59

Ah I think it's sweet but willing to concede! My relative was in her late 80s so I associate it with that generation more than that of my parents. Maybe it'll come back in eventually! I do know an 18 year old Irene but I think she's Spanish ( or Italian I can't remember) and it's pronounced slightly differently

Oh come off it. I know plenty of old fashioned names are making a comeback but Irene?! Just no.

MissSmiley · 13/03/2020 17:01

Lol

Istical · 13/03/2020 17:02

I really like it, definitely due a revival 😁

Cucumbersalad · 13/03/2020 17:04

I remember hearing a child with this name on holidays over 25 years ago and even then I thought it was unusual for a child...but I really liked it! Like you, thought it was sweet, and I still remember the girl because of her (IMO) pretty name all these years later!

saltedtortillachips · 13/03/2020 17:24

I'm glad I'm not completely alone in liking it! I'm not sure how it's any worse than some other old fashioned names which are coming back in

Oh I love Irene! Although I have an Eric so I favour older names but I would definitely go for Irene

Collidascope · 13/03/2020 18:37

I've just been rewatching The Forsyte Saga, and it's pronounced I-REE-nee in that, which I really liked. Apparently that's the common old pronunciation.

Windyatthebeach · 13/03/2020 18:41

Renee'?

Icantreachthepretzels · 13/03/2020 18:44

I think Irene is beautiful. It was my Grandma's name - born 1930 - definitely part of the same era as all the old lady chic names that are in nowadays.

Lllot5 · 13/03/2020 18:48

Irene Adler. From Sherlock Holmes I always think of.

Ihaveamind · 13/03/2020 18:49

I like it and if it stays out of the top 100 your potential daughter will be fairly unique. ☺️

emmathedilemma · 13/03/2020 19:57

I think it could grow on me.....

IWantT0BreakFree · 13/03/2020 20:03

I really like it, I think it's very pretty. Suspect that opinions will largely depend on the age of the people you ask and who they associate the name with. It's definitely not a name that I associate with my parents' generation but I can see why it would lack appeal for people whose parents are of that generation.

123Dancewithme · 13/03/2020 20:53

I think it could make a comeback, just like similar sounding names like Ivy and Iris have.

MsTSwift · 13/03/2020 20:55

My grandmother’s name she flipping hated it and would spin in her grave if used by us !

Tummelthecat · 13/03/2020 20:58

Its my name, I love it, and it means 'peace'.

Grasspigeons · 13/03/2020 21:02

I had a great aunt I REE nee which i like. Less keen on eye-reen

Merename · 13/03/2020 21:17

ADORE Irene! Classy, feminine, interesting, work on a baby or an adult.

IVflytrap · 13/03/2020 22:41

I like it, although prefer the earlier (and now much rarer) pronunciation Eye-ree-nee over Eye-reen. Still a nice name though, even when 2 syllables.

SassyBrassyBitch · 13/03/2020 22:42

Come on!
