What do people think of this girls name? I recently heard it as Malorie Blackman the author is on tv a lot due to her book being made to a series but I prefer the spelling the title. I love how it’s a strong non made up name with a cute nickname Mally.

However, I found out it means unfortunate or unlucky which has really put me off. Would this bother you? DD1s name means bright and radiant so it feels mean to use a name with a negative meaning

As in Mallory Towers? I don't like surnames used as first names for girls.

The meaning would bother me a lot.

I had no idea what it means, all I think of is The Babysitters Club.

Astronica · 10/03/2020 22:36

The meaning wouldn't bother me, but I'm not real keen on the sounds, just as I'm not keen on similar sounding names like Marjorie and
Valerie. Also, I just think of the character Mallory in Family Ties which was such a long-running show - and such a distinctive name that I've never come across outside the show. Mally nn is okay - I'd look at other ways to that if it's the nickname you want. eg Amaryllis, Amalia, Madeleine, Margalit, Matilda. That said, Mallory isn't terrible, just not my taste.

I don't like it and the meaning would put me off even more. Why would you want to name your child unfortunate or unlucky?

Whatsyourflava · 10/03/2020 22:44

How about Martha Marnie or Margot

DoctorBambino · 11/03/2020 11:10

I would never use a name that had a negative meaning but I do love name meanings so this might not bother other people. Also Mallory makes me think of ducks, I assume because of mallards

bridgetreilly · 11/03/2020 18:13

I prefer Malorie, but I don't mind Mallory. The meaning wouldn't particularly worry me.

Leo’s daughter in West Wing. That’s a very niche reference though

The meaning would bother me.
