Is this ok for a boys name?

So me and my DH have gone through 100’s of names for a son to be and can’t agree on any.
(I like the name to have a meaning)

Yesterday we was searching online and the name Kymani came up.
It means strong (which is like dad), powerful (like mum) and adventurous traveller (like us both)
And we both liked it.

But is it too ‘out there’?

Bit out there for my tastes. How about Jack? Wink

Just googled it - do you have any East African connections, OP?

Otherwise it sounds a bit like cultural appropriation.

ThatsWotSheSaid · 08/03/2020 07:56

I don’t like it but what ever you call him people will get used to it.

essexanon · 08/03/2020 07:58

@familyofaliens I probably should of referenced it.
My son is African American, we live in the UK and he was actually conceived whilst we was in Ethopia visiting in-laws family.

I really like it and love the meanings you have given Smile

Sounds perfect for you. Nice name.

Veterinari · 08/03/2020 08:07

I think fine if you have east African connections.

How is it pronounced?

Kim ah nee
Ky mah nee

Another way?
The main issue in the UK would be pronunciation and the shortening to Kim - usually a girl's name
Also if your son is born in the UK would he be African American? Or just British?

essexanon · 08/03/2020 08:14

@Veterinari my son will be born here, so will be black British.
It’s pronounced key-mah-nee

I understand one of the the Marley sons has the same name and he is Jamaican, Like me and my DH so I don’t think we have to be ‘East African’ to have the right to use the name.
Albeit our roots are African.

Kim is a boys name too - I know 2 male Kims. Sounds like a nice name.

Yes, that drip-feed definitely changes things.

@DoctorBambino @Thebookswereherfriends thank you! We too love the name and the meaning but we know the world can be a cruel place when it comes to names, so just want to make sure I’m setting my boy up for ridicule the rest of his life x

@MsFrog yea I don’t mind the nickname Kim, he may even get called Marni for short, online suggests Ky as a nickname, again I don’t mind that either. X

If you and your Dh are happy with the name then go for it.
Everyone has their own preferences / tastes.
I think it's perfect for your little boy 💙

essexanon · 08/03/2020 08:24

Thanks @Sleep10 ☺️ Xx
