Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
viques · 06/03/2020 16:33

Are you having a baby OP or are you looking for a character name in a novel you are writing about a quirky non conformist probably working as a private detective but with strange mystical powers eg second sight or the ability fortell the future.

If the latter then any of the names would do. If the former please think again and remember that what might be whimsical to you is the burden your child will be bearing for the next 80 plus years.

MikeUniformMike · 06/03/2020 18:19

Ottolie is spelt Ottilie. Still don't like it.
Artimus is spelt Artemis
Tuppence is the conventional spelling. Look up the meaning of tup.
Ottaline is spelt Ottoline and sounds like a west country railway line or something.
Not sure what Artimissa is a misspelling of.

Puck is a bit wild.

Are you actually pregnant?

BlankTimes · 06/03/2020 19:09

Not sure what Artimissa is a misspelling of

Artemisia ?

exitbooth · 06/03/2020 19:11

I know a tuppence. Not only does it make me cringe every time I hear the ghastly name she's judged when really it should be her mum who's judged for giving her the daft name in the first place
It also can't be shortened to anything nice. Hey tupp just does not have a nice ring to it.

CuteOrangeElephant · 06/03/2020 19:14

We had on our list for a girl:

Hedwig
Artemis
Hero
Zelda
Clementine
Isolde
Rosamund
Yseult

florascotia2 · 06/03/2020 20:04

OP, I really, really don't want to be negative, but - whatever name you choose - can I most respectfully suggest you find out the usual spelling AND the cultural baggage that it carries with it. A lot of what's listed below might be fine by you; if so, I apologise.

Your baby your choice, of course.

Caspian (CS Lewis/Narnia/ Christian apologetics)
Sage (accounting software and a culinary herb)
Persephone
Clementine
Tiger (will the little one be wild and endangered?)
Woolf (as in the surname?; the animal is Wolf. A wolf is not a human baby.)
Blossom
Clover
Maple 🍁
Petal (brand of loo paper)
Sparrow (provervbial for a poor, worthless creature)
Fox (yawn)
Lark (as in prank or silly jest?)
Primrose
Thandiway (not the usual spelling)
Ottolie (ditto)
Amandine (nice; are you French?)
Bluebell
Ari
Birdie (so many things problematic with this...)
Heath (as in Blasted heath?)
Beau (Beauregard) (Beau is French and male for handsome; Beauregard = beautiful gaze = surname or nickname)
Odette (fine)
Auberon (fine, if for a boy)
Dove (soap)
Honey (sweet and sticky - a nickname rather than a proper name)
Cosmo
Emery (emery boards are what you file your nails with)
River (is the baby a river?)
Aurora
Augustine
Adeline
Bobby (only if short for Robert or Roberta)
Fawn (the boring beige colour or a baby deer?)
Maudie (prefer Maud or Maude)
Ottaline (usual spelling is Otttiline)
Calliope
Enid
Dodie (as in Princess Diana's boyfriend?)
Coco (Coco Chanel's real name was Gabrielle; Coco was a nickname)
Etienne (Stephen in French; fine for a boy)
Florian
Dulce (Dulcie is the usual spelling)
Odin (is the child king of the Norse gods?)
Artimus (arti) (Artemis, as previous posters have said ;Greek virgin huntress goddess)
Pippin (type of apple)
Perdita
Ezra
Calico (a type of cloth; would you use Denim as a name?)
Puck (if the baby is a 16th century forest spirit, fine. If not, consider the playground)
Azariah (Nice name, but with massive and worrying Australian resonances)
Ira
Zephaniah
Isadore (Usual spelling is Isidore)
Vida
Rommily (Usual spelling is Romilly; it's a place name which many people don't like as personal names)
Indigo
Petal (as above; brand of loo paper)
Coco (as above)
Perdita
Savannah
Tempest (what are you wishing for?)
Alouette (Of course, you know the nursery rhyme, about pulling all the feathers off the poor little skylark?)
Xanthippe ( can you pronounce this /)
Indigo
Bluebell
Tigerlilly (Name of exotic flower; a lot to live up to; usual spelling is Tigerlily)
Artimissa (artie) (Artemisia is the usual spelling)
Appoline (Appolline is the usual spelling)
Florant (Florent is the usual spelling; usually a surname ; it's masculine, of course)
Tuppance (Tusual spelling Tuppence - as previous posters have said, it's slang for female genitalia )
Honeysuckle
Theodosia
Fiyero (is the baby a witch/part of a musical or computer game?)

BikeRunSki · 06/03/2020 20:54

I find it strange that @florascotia objects to Calico as a name on the basis that it’s a word, but is OK with Savannah and Indigo. Both also words.

I know Calico is not established as a name, but it’s a pretty sound. The rock star Alice Cooper has a daughter called Calico, I bet there’s a few about. I’ve never understood Savannah as a name - it’s a habitat! I wouldn’t call a child Tundra or Permafrost.

florascotia2 · 06/03/2020 22:15

Strange to say, BikeRunSki I was trying not to be too negative. I actually agree with you about Savannah and Indigo, but they are more widely used as names. It's difficult; opinions and preferences are one thing; spelling mistakes and way-out strangeness are another. Alice Cooper has many talents and achievements but - just personally - I would not follow his example in naming a child.

I think Acer was a tree first

Oh, it still is. I've got one in my garden. But most kids' first thought is likely to be the laptop.

Twisique · 07/03/2020 10:59

Faunia
Sorrel
Delphi
Clio
Tanis

Oriunda · 07/03/2020 14:36

OP posts:
Crunchymum · 07/03/2020 22:08

Surely with a list that long, you don't need more names?

They are mainly awful and you have Petal and Maudie twice!!

Crunchymum · 07/03/2020 22:09

Oh and my cat is a Calico (ginger, black and white!!)

Laureatus · 08/03/2020 01:31

Zinnia
Delphine (pronounced Delfeen)
Petronella / Pernilla (variants of the same name)

I'm sure I had another one but it's gone!

Loving the fact someone suggested Rollo, I mentioned that in my list a few months ago and it really polarised people!

MikeUniformMike · 08/03/2020 18:05

Pick something easy to say and spell.
