Classic but ‘not posh’ girl’s name

Hello, we have recently found out we’re having a girl. I already have an Alasdair, but DH and I have never yet agreed on a girl’s name. He is keen on Penelope - which I have vetoed as I don’t like Penny and think it would be inevitable. His other very subjective requirements are ‘not too posh’ and ‘not the same name as someone I don’t like’!

I like classic names, mostly, ideally not too popular. Names that I like - but can’t seem to pick a front runner, are:

Elizabeth
Stella
Estelle
Imogen
Iris
Simone
Merle (DH strong veto, sadly)
Viviana
Marilla (that’s an Anne of Green Gables reference, not sure if I could do it, but nn Rilla is pretty!)

Any thoughts? Anything else I might like?

Alice and Alexandra are excellent names, but may be a bit of a mouthful with Alasdair.

We have the same taste in boy's names Wink. Our girl's shortlist was:
Imogen
Rosa
Emma

My first thoughts were Elizabeth and Alice.

What my DH thinks is ‘posh’ seems completely arbitrary - he doesn’t think Elizabeth is, for example..

It's odd isn't it - I don't think of it as posh either even though it is the name of the poshest person in the country! 😂

I LOVE Marilla and nickname Rilla. I’d totally forgotten Marilla of Anne of Green Gables fame, but what a great namesake - strong, uncompromising, loving. It’s great!

I think Louise is ready for a come back.

I don't have children but if I had a daughter I would consider Grace, I like it as a name and there have been some fab historical 'Graces'.

Grace Darling was the daughter of a lighthouse keeper and rowed out to save sailors in a particularly bad storm in 1838.

Grace Hopper, particularly talented computer scientist who invented the term 'debugging' as she literally had to take bugs out of her computer hardware, oh and she was also a rear admiral in the US navy.

Lots of others in politics, arts,mathematics...

YouForgetYourself · 11/03/2020 06:31

I was about to suggest Grace. It's rather lovely.

I really wanted Cecilia for our girl but we chose something else. Maybe that's a bit posh though?

We also almost went with Alasdair for our boy! How about something else sort of Scottish?

Flora
Fleur
Isla
Iona
Maisie

I also have a soft spot for Sarah which is classic and underused and incredibly pretty.

Or Nancy Catherine - one of my great aunts. She was feisty.

I’ve always liked Celia and Frances.
