Old fashioned boys names - Lionel?

whatshouldicallme · 18/02/2020 18:19

I like classic, old fashioned names — I love Lionel but not sure how it would be received by others...I feel like it’s in the same class as other old fashioned names that are somewhat in at the moment (eg Albert, Jasper, Barnaby, Theodore) but worried because it’s much less common. What would you think of a baby with this name?

If you love it, use it. It's a refreshing change from all the Theos and Arthurs.

Wintersun13 · 18/02/2020 18:42

I think it's great.

Lionel is a well established classic name that everyone's heard before. I wouldn't worry about it being too rare or uncommon ! And Leo is a natural nickname (Leo being super common atm).

Neolara · 18/02/2020 18:43

I think it's dreadful. Sorry.

june2007 · 18/02/2020 18:48

If you like it. Not for me but def worse.

Ellmau · 18/02/2020 19:40

Lovely name.

Notso · 18/02/2020 19:49

I've loved it since I was a child because of that TV programme with Judy Dench and Geoffrey Palmer, and of course Lionel Blair.
Don't know if anyone else will see those as a positive though Grin

Peachbubble · 18/02/2020 20:00

I quite like it actually. Reminds me of Lionel Richie.

weegiemum · 18/02/2020 20:39

It makes me think of Lionel Messi, one of the greatest footballers ever.

Can you tell I have a teenage ds who is very into football!??

Dozer · 18/02/2020 20:39

Like it!

missyB1 · 18/02/2020 20:41

Yes I like it but prefer Linus, what do you think of that one?

user1493494961 · 18/02/2020 21:54

It's awful, I don't think it's classic.

mathanxiety · 19/02/2020 04:58

I would categorise it with Nigel and Neville.

whatshouldicallme · 19/02/2020 15:20

Eek, that's what I was afriad of. Thanks!

I really like Lionel! I thunk it sounds handsome and string and gives a break from all the Leos.

Poorolddaddypig · 19/02/2020 15:55

I agree it’s a bit of a Nigel/Neville name

whatshouldicallme · 19/02/2020 17:51

Hmm not sure about those ones!!

You’ve listed Barnaby with a load of popular Top 100 names. Barnaby is rare! It’s outside the top 250! How about Barnaby? It’s so underused but so lovely

Don’t like Lionel sounds too much like “liar” to me at the start

whatshouldicallme · 20/02/2020 19:34

I do like Barnaby, but love Lionel the most! I don't like Linus as for some reason it reminds me of mucus.

I just don't know if it invites bullying etc. I was hoping that the classmates of today's baby Lionels would associate it mostly with Lionel Messi and so be protected from any real problems. I also was thinking that if he really hated it, he could also choose to go by Leo which is obviously very popular at the moment! So gives him a bit of an out if it's too out there...Confused

Not sure I'd use it but it's a good solid recognisable name, maybe one that suits older people than a baby but he'll grow into it and Leo is quite cute.

AlpacaGoodnight · 21/02/2020 10:11

Love it!

TatianaLarina · 21/02/2020 12:16

I really like it - reminds me of Lionel Tennyson. Has an Edwardian feel.

Blair and Ritchie might put some people off but I don’t personally give a fuck about popular culture.

Mamabear88 · 21/02/2020 20:47

LOVE

missmouse101 · 21/02/2020 20:54

Awful! How about Seymour instead?
