Audrey or Tabitha?

Baby 3 (gender will be a surprise) is a way off yet but I liked both of these names when I had my first daughter and ended up giving her Audrey as one of her middle names. Tabitha wasn’t used in the end.

Audrey was my fabulous Grandma’s name and as she’s recently passed away it would mean a lot to me and my family for a new baby to have the same name. It would no doubt be shortened to Auds or Audie if we went for it. There’s just something about it though that doesn’t grab me 100% (until recent years I just saw it as a Granny name and not much more). We all miss her like crazy and it would be fab to have a mini Audrey.

My husband and I both love Tabitha (I don’t mind the comments about it sounding like a “cat name” as my son has a “dog name”). I like the nicknames that go with it and also think it goes well with my older childrens’ names. I think I prefer it as a name but obviously it doesn’t have the same family connection as Audrey.

Luckily we have a boy name sorted so no worries there!

Which do you prefer? Or any suggestions of similar names we may not have thought of?
Thanks in advance!

Tabitha's ok but I really don't like Audrey, sorry. It's so dated. I just think of Audrey Roberts in Coronation Street.

SW16 · 18/02/2020 03:42

Tabitha

Jossina · 18/02/2020 04:18

Audrey, though it also depends on what your son's names are.

WildCherryBlossom · 18/02/2020 04:18

Tabitha is beautiful, it's timeless and elegant. I think it would be fine for both DDs to have Audrey as a middle name after a much loved relative. But I think giving the little one her sister's middle name as a first name might always seem like you couldn't be bothered to find a name for specially her.

Josie465 · 18/02/2020 06:40

Love Audrey

pilates · 18/02/2020 06:44

Tabitha, Audrey is dull

Tigerty · 18/02/2020 06:51

Tabitha. I like it. You’ve already used Aubrey for her sister.

reallynow1 · 18/02/2020 07:00

Tabitha, I was planning on having a Tabitha.....I have 2 boys instead 😁

TildaTurnip · 18/02/2020 07:04

I don’t think it would be fair to use Audrey for a first name with it being your DD1’s first name. You could use Audrey again for the middle name though.

MsTSwift · 18/02/2020 07:04

Audrey is a lovely name and totally wasted as a middle name. Middle names are largely utterly pointless so that wouldn’t stop me using it

Sharonthetotallyinsane · 18/02/2020 07:05

Tabitha. You’ve already used Audrey.

BasiliskStare · 18/02/2020 07:34

Ignoring the middle name thing - I don't think of Coronation St - I think of Audrey Hepburn

Whereas Tabitha I do think of Tabitha Twitchitt

Poetryinaction · 18/02/2020 07:59

Tabitha is awful.

Crookshanksthecat · 18/02/2020 08:04

Tabitha definitely, great name and Tabby or Tabs are both super cute when they're little.

Audrey is awful imo. It a very hard sounding name and I can't think of a nice shortening.

5BlueHydrangea · 18/02/2020 08:12

Audrey is more classic. I have an elderly neighbour called Audrey, she says her nickname was always 'Awful Audrey!'
I don't think I've ever met a Tabitha.

BarbaraBeast · 18/02/2020 08:32

Thanks for all the input everyone-it’s so useful to hear all the different perspectives.

I think we’re leaning more towards giving Audrey as a middle name to match my older girl and maybe thinking of a different first name as I don’t feel Tabitha Audrey flows very naturally when I say it.

Our other contenders are Cleo and Ottilie.
No doubt it’ll be a boy after all this fuss!

I love both, and I have a Tabitha. She's known at T to us, Tabby to some friends and was supposed to be Abi.

Trahira · 18/02/2020 09:39

I prefer Tabitha

OnABeachSomewhere · 18/02/2020 09:46

I dislike Tabitha. Audrey is OK but maybe one of its related names could work? Audrielle, Audris, Audrina? Or how about other names which contain 'aud' such as Claudia?

reefedsail · 18/02/2020 09:48

I think give them both Audrey in the middle. All the men in DHs family have the same middle name and nobody thinks anything of it. Nobody remembers why anymore though!

I like Tabitha- we just named our kitten that. Grin

BasiliskStare · 18/02/2020 09:56

Ottilie I think is a fabulous name .

Hope you have a girl Grin

WildCherryBlossom · 18/02/2020 10:00

How about Tabitha Cleo Audrey...?

Twooter · 18/02/2020 11:15

Good plan OP. To me Audrey is a granny name that needs to stay a granny name.

Annasgirl · 18/02/2020 11:18

Tabitha.

Wintersun13 · 18/02/2020 12:06

I like a pp suggestion of giving a name related to Audrey. Audrine, Audra ? The medieval english version of the name is Etheldred, do you like that ? Ethel ?

Aude ? Audrielle ?

I like this option because :

  • it solves the issue of the name being your older daughter's middle name
  • it's a nice reference to your grandma while at the same time being more modern for a little girl born in 2020.

I'm planning on doing something similar for my son due in May - give him Yvain as a middle name, both in keeping with the arthurian theme of my eldest's middle name, and as a reference to my father's name Yves.
