Our baby girl is due next Tuesday. I can’t believe it, woohoo!
Sooo my partner has been favouring Molly, where I quite like Mollie. But now I don’t know lol! What does everyone think? Or do we have to flip a coin? WinkGrin

Definitely Molly

OhLook · 17/02/2020 20:25

Molly. Mollie is the down-market spelling.

17caterpillars1mouse · 17/02/2020 22:13

I prefer just Molly, strange because I prefer Maisie to Maisy and they are very similar, but no I definitely prefer Molly

Astronica · 17/02/2020 23:00

I prefer Molly.

moofolk · 17/02/2020 23:01

Molly.

Spell names properly or they're in for a lifetime of spelling it out.

Liddell · 18/02/2020 00:11

Molly

AmelieTaylor · 18/02/2020 00:15

Molly

Imo if you don’t like the original spelling, you don’t like the name enough to use it.

Notso · 18/02/2020 00:22

Molly.

For some reason I always read lie as the word lie not a lee sound.
A friend announced her new DD as Poppie and I read she was called Popeye!

Ingridla · 18/02/2020 00:29

Definitely Molly

(Says mum of a Molly)

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 18/02/2020 00:56

I have a Molly. However I wish I'd have been more adventurous and braver now and gone with something like Molleigh, Molli, so I'd say Mollie.

rosettesforjill · 18/02/2020 01:02

I like Mollie. Finding it a little strange that PP think it's a "new" spelling when it's the name a relative of mine has used for 98 years Grin

Toomuchtrouble4me · 18/02/2020 01:04

Molly. Molly is elegant.

Mollie is a bit common imo, trying too hard to be different, or parents can't spell.

Toomuchtrouble4me · 18/02/2020 01:07

My DH and I were like this with our 2nd - Johnathan or Jonathan.
We went with Joshua.

Kokeshi123 · 18/02/2020 02:20

Another vote for "Molly." "Mollie" made me think of something with a sticky/gooey texture and I couldn't think why---then I realized that the spelling was reminding me of the word "emollient."

By the way, re PP, Jonathan has only one possible spelling that is correct. "John" is a different name and has nothing to do with Jonathan.

Jossina · 18/02/2020 04:15

As a nn for what?

Josie465 · 18/02/2020 06:41

Molly. Otherwise it's a lifetime of "with an ie"

dangerrabbit · 18/02/2020 06:47

Molly

Well there’s also Jonathon I guess. Or Johnathon

I am with you though people don’t know that John and Jonathan are completely unrelated names.

Trahira · 18/02/2020 09:01

Molly

Aragog · 18/02/2020 12:44

DD's is with an ie.

The older people we'd known if called it had ie as their spelling, dating back over a 100 years. We also preferred the way it looked too.

Dd likes her name and in 17 years she has encountered no issues with that spelling. Well, no more than I have had with a name that has legitimate alternative spellings anyway. She accepts some people might spell it wrong and isn't upset or offended if they do, just like I'm not.

She's only ever been in class with one other girl with the same spelling, and only one other with the same name - so although popular in the name charts, in real life we haven't discovered it to be so round here.

Aragog · 18/02/2020 12:45

Definitely choose a correctly spelled name.

Oh dear.
It's been spelt with an ie for over a hundred years. How long does a name need to exist before you class it as a correct version!?!

Aragog · 18/02/2020 12:51

er I wish I'd have been more adventurous and braver now and gone with something like Molleigh, Molli,

I really don't like those versions. They definitely look made up spellings. Certainly I've never come across those versions when looking at historical documents, etc.

As for the name spelling correcting / it's really not that hard, turkey. My name is Claire. It can be spelled Clare or Clair too, and has been for years. It's really no hassle at all to tell people how to spell it on the odd occasion I need to.. I have different friends with the names Catherine, Katharine, and Kathryn - all valid spellings of the same name. They've all made it to adulthood without too many issues!

sibbys · 03/03/2020 19:32

Our daughter is Molly. I think Mollie looks a bit silly. Also she'd have to always say "it's with an ie!"
