Is anyone called, or know someone in real life called, Lilith?

Hubby and I are expecting a baby girl in a couple of months. We cannot seem to settle on a name.

At the moment we are considering Lilith.

Hubby likes the name, and we've done a fair bit of digging to find out more about the name's origin and meaning. However, hubby is wary about the potential of the name becoming a burden, drawing questions and unwelcome attention, once older.

So, does anyone have the name, or know someone teenaged or older with the name, who is happy to share their own experiences?

Thank you 😁

How can you be comfortable calling your daughter a name that means “sexually wanton [...] stealing babies in the night [...] wife of the Devil?

Even if you are comfortable with, how will your DD feel when she looks up the meaning of her name when she’s old enough to do so and realised the meaning behind it?

I’d be gutted if my name meant anything like that.

Such a shame because if it had a different meaning, it would be a genuinely beautiful name.

On the plus side, bet my life, she’d be the only one in the whole School with that name! 😬

Just the one. My friend has just named her baby Lilith.

It's a lovely name.

BrutusMcDogface · 16/02/2020 19:41

I also taught a Lilith and she was LOUD. She also preferred to be called Lily 🤷🏻‍♀️

BrutusMcDogface · 16/02/2020 19:43

Good grief! I didn’t know the meaning! Every child at some point in their lives, looks up the meaning of their name....it was something set at school both when I was at school and also when I taught!

Rachelhaydenberk1 · 16/02/2020 19:43

Wow, I would have assumed it meant Lily as in the flower!

I had no idea it was Adam's first wife who was turned into a demon for rejecting him! And means night demon.

That is kinda empowering though. I like that she rejected him!! That is kinda cool. I wonder if that is how they got the name for Lilith Fair, the female music fest! The things you learn!!!

I dont like the meaning but I don't think the story is that bad. It's kinda female empowering.

Only someone who changed her name as an adult when she became a witch Confused.

Jellybe4n · 16/02/2020 19:46

@NeverGuessWho

That is one believed origin/meaning of the name. Not necessarily the correct one.

@Rachelhaydenberk1
From our research, it is indeed where the fair got its name.

I think of the Devil connotation as I like that kind of TV but she could always shorten to the more popular Lily?

Jellybe4n · 16/02/2020 19:54

@strawberrylipgloss
It was Lucifer and Sabrina that gave us the idea in the first place! Then we researched it :)

I know one Lilith and a couple of Elspeths's which I feel is similar in style. Both lovely names.

Cbeebiesrehab · 16/02/2020 20:02

I like the name and the meaning wouldn’t bother me in particular if it were my name. A lot of names don’t have very nice meanings. However what would bother me is the amount of people that can’t pronounce their ‘th’ sound (including lots of children) she would spend a lot of time being called Lilifff and that would wind me up!

BarkandCheese · 16/02/2020 20:05

I like it and don’t personally have an issue with its origins, but it does make quite a statement which you might find yourself having to defend.

Jellybe4n · 16/02/2020 20:31

@Cbeebiesrehab
Her half brother, my youngest son, is called Ethan, my step daughter calls him Efan. She's 6 and still struggling to say 'th', though she's getting better and, can just about say Lilith.

My first thought is that it's a demon's name. Or a succubus or something.

BecauseReasons · 16/02/2020 20:34

I know a 3 year old Lilith, but she gets called Lily so I'm not sure many people even know her proper name.

PaquitaVariation · 16/02/2020 21:32

@LindaLyndell

Is the sibling called Lucifer...?

Not quite but along very similar lines!!

Cohle · 16/02/2020 22:42

Yes, a friend's DD.

She is known as Lily now because she couldn't pronounce Lilith at all as a child. My friend is reasonably irritated by this because she wanted to avoid popular names.

The demon connection would put me right off but don't think it was a particular issue in this case.

Leflic · 16/02/2020 23:05

No but I really wished I’d thought of Lilith now. Lovely name despite the misogyny.

Jossina · 16/02/2020 23:38

Lilith fair in the USA is a music festival celebrating women. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lilith_Fair I've also know one and she was pretty much the opposite of the definition. Shy, sweet, down to earth. Quite nice all around, but with a backbone of steel when she needed it. I've always liked the name, and the nn of Lil.

Saladd0dger · 16/02/2020 23:41

DD4 has a friend at nursery called Lilith

Rachelhaydenberk1 · 16/02/2020 23:45

What about Lillian Blythe? I quite find that stunning!!

Same sounds but you can avoid Lilith. Although I guess you said the meaning doesn't bother you! I'm on the fence if it would bother me. Its empowering in a way but the actual meaning doesn't tell the whole story and there seem to be multiple stories as well. So bizarre that such a light name like Lilith is so heavy!!

LostInTheColonies · 16/02/2020 23:48

Lilith Norman - author.

LordsALeaping · 17/02/2020 00:48

Yes, very cool film director. And the reason there’s an association with a baby-killing sex demon is precisely because one strand of thought has Lilith as Adam’s first wife, made at the same time and in the same way as him by God (ie. not from his rib), and who refused to be subservient to him, and was punished for it.

I wouldn’t have the slightest issue with the meaning.

MooseBeTimeForSummer · 17/02/2020 01:05

I know a Lilleth. She’s Welsh. And lovely.
