Just interested to know what people’s take on spelling preference for this name is and why? When first started thinking about I realised I thought Zoë was “correct” but now from reading not so sure, seems Zoe more usual English spelling? Also something I really like about Zoey. Tempted by all 3!

Zoe

@Zoeykh people aren’t saying the names origins are American just that choice of spelling

@Missushbb Zoé is the correct and usual spelling in France. Were any of the families French?

Zoey looks uneducated and I would expect the parents to be American or illiterate.

I would use Zoë, but I also would be prepared to accept that it will often be written as Zoe - especially on anything computer-based.

I reckon they just panicked over their diacritics.

TheWordmeister · 13/02/2020 20:20

Zoey is a bit dumbing down to me; spelt phonetically for the stupids.

Zoe is fine without the diaeresis (only a twit would pronounce it like toe), but Zoë looks nicer.

georgialondon · 13/02/2020 20:24

Zoe 100%

CherryMaple · 13/02/2020 20:48

I think people are being a bit harsh on Zoey. While my DD is Zoë, I always thought Zoey was pretty and that the alternative spelling is cool Grin

Zoeykh · 13/02/2020 22:04

Seriously people are actually commenting on peoples parents on how the name is spelt? illiterate? Bit over the top dont you think? Dumbing? Ok I get people dont like the way some names are spelt but to be so God damn disgraceful in your wording is vile

Strugglingtoquit · 13/02/2020 23:36

Zoe

sashh · 14/02/2020 05:51

It's often used in the US

Yes and they call girls 'Shaun'.

dont believe at all its downgrading or American as pp said its Greek and means life

Greek words, when spelled using the Roman alphabet have an 'i' sound for the e at the end, hence Penelope not Penelopey and Persephone not Persephoney.

It's not just names, hyperbole, systole, etc.

Having and then naming a baby is a joyous moment. I had and named my babies over a decade ago so don't come on these threads very often. I am surprised at the rudeness of some comments, especially since posters have indicated that they are called or have a daughter called Zoey.

I can assure you that I do not lack education, I nor my daughter are 'downmarket', I am definitely not illiterate and I am not American. OP I wish you all the very best with your pregnancy and naming your daughter. Whatever you choose will be perfect and I hope that your daughter, whether a Zoe, Zoë or. Zoey, turns out to be as lovely, lively, compassionate, clever, funny and fabulous as my Zoey.

Really? This is the internet.

People are entitled to their views. I don’t expect everyone to like my name or the names I chose for my children. I don’t get offended if people don’t like them - it’s down to personal taste.

If some people don’t like phonetic spellings of classic names that’s up to them. It was a risk you ran when choosing that name, just as I ran the risk of being labelled ‘posh’ or ‘pretentious’ for the ones I chose.

^ this.
Don't come on the internet, ask for opinions and then get offended when people give you their opinions.

Sounds like people who don't know how to spell Zoë are getting a bit defensive about their "unusual" spellings. Wink

LochJessMonster · 14/02/2020 16:38

How many people are actually going to put the dots over the ‘e’ though?
I don’t even know how to on a computer tbh

It’ll end up at Zoe no matter what you chose

Wintersun13 · 14/02/2020 19:05

Wow, this does seem to be a highly divisive issue !

Personally I think that "everyone knows the pronunciation" and "people won't know how to spell it on a keyboard" are not particularly good reasons to purposefully misspell a name.

Though I agree that american (qwerty) keyboards are an absolute pain and I cannot type anything on one of those.

I'd write the name Zoë, the way it's supposed to be. If people misspell it, I'll be happy to silently judge them Grin

That said I'm not overly bothered by the spelling Zoey. The spelling Zoe (dotless) is the one that really feels unfinished to me.

BikeRunSki · 14/02/2020 19:27

DSis (Zoë) has always used her dots. So have her friends, family and teachers etc. She does get annoyed though, with online forms etc that do not let her use an ë.

She lives in France now, and uses Zoé, when writing in French. Or maybe Zoè, I don’t often write to her in French!

Whatsyourflava · 14/02/2020 19:42

What have you decided @BramwellHadThoughtOfEverything

Wintersun13 · 14/02/2020 19:50

"She lives in France now, and uses Zoé, when writing in French. Or maybe Zoè, I don’t often write to her in French!"

Zoé 's definitely the proper French spelling.

AdmiralSirArchibald · 14/02/2020 19:56

We have Zoe and it has made me smile that people say it looks like it rhymes with toe, because we mostly call her Zo anyway!

BikeRunSki · 14/02/2020 20:13

@Wintersun13, she gets it right, it was me who can’t ever rennet which way to flick the accent when I’m addressing cards to her. So I usually revert back to Zoë.

IwantToDatePicard · 14/02/2020 20:32

I am a Zoë and I love it.

17caterpillars1mouse · 14/02/2020 21:14

I like Zoey best, I think because I prefer longer names to short and it makes it look more interesting whilst still being a recognisable spelling
