Edie - popular?

Is Edie, whether as a standalone name or diminutive, particularly common or popular where you live? This is more out of curiosity than a need to be rare or uncommon.

My Grandma’s sister is called Edie, it’s short for Edith but she has never been called Edith.

I know a ten year old Edie and a one year old Edie. There’s also one in my DC’s school.

marshallrubblechaserockyzoomer · 10/02/2020 14:26

I know 4

Kittykatmacbill · 10/02/2020 14:43

I have an edith, other people call her edie. I know about 8 ediths from school, swim classes / activities and friends (or friends of friends) children. It’s not as uncommon as I hoped!

youareacuntychops · 10/02/2020 14:53

Pronounced Eedee I'm assuming and short for Edith?

I don't know any. I think it's nice. It may rise in popularity soon but that's never bothered me. Might bother you.

Whatsyourflava · 10/02/2020 15:35

Yeh it’s still outside the top 100 so I say use it
Edie is lovely
I love Edith in particular

peachgreen · 10/02/2020 15:40

I love Edie so much, wanted it for DD but DH vetoed it. Also because of Diary of a Crush!

littlejalapeno · 10/02/2020 15:42

But if you do you must call her sibling Patsy

thaimelon · 10/02/2020 15:47

I know a 4yr old Edie

whatausername · 10/02/2020 18:30

@littlejalapeno but Edwina's nickname was Eddie, was it not? Edie isn't pronounced like Eddie

I have never known anyone with that name where I live, and no young ones with that name either in any baby groups nursery. (Live in london). But seems to be popular on mumsnet

BillyAndTheSillies · 10/02/2020 18:41

DS is Eden, and he goes by Edie most of the time which really confuses anyone who thinks Eden isn't a unisex name.

I know three Edith's under three, only one of them goes by Edie.

Matleavemadam · 10/02/2020 19:57

I have come across 2 Ediths in baby groups not sure if they go by Edie, only been introduced as Edith. So no Edie's as a stand alone name. I like it though, I also like Enid which I think will be less popular than Edie.

Eden, Edie, Edward, Ed all look and sound masculine to me.

tinygigolo · 10/02/2020 20:06

In our area it is so popular - we have one (Edith nn Edie) and I would say I know 5 others under 5. To be honest I am kicking myself as I thought it was really unusual when I was pregnant!

Wheresthebiffer2 · 10/02/2020 20:48

A three-year old girl, called Eadie.
Never met any others.

Flissmoon · 11/02/2020 22:06

I know one, she’s 3 and adorable! Also love the Eadie spelling.

Poppydaisies · 12/02/2020 07:13

Eadie makes the pronunciation much more obvious.

Ed or Edie could be short for Edward or Edwina.

Poorolddaddypig · 12/02/2020 09:29

I only know of one Edie. She is 2. I have never met anyone else called Edith or Edie of any age.

Poorolddaddypig · 12/02/2020 09:32

No need to spell it Eadie when the pronunciation of Edie is ‘eadie’. Think Eadie looks silly.

june2007 · 12/02/2020 10:54

And yes Eden is unisex but the Edens I know don,t seem to shorten there name.

Pippilangstrumpfi · 12/02/2020 13:40

I would pronounce Ed and Edie like Edition or Edit, rather than EEdie.

Lavenderblues · 12/02/2020 13:51

I know one Edith. But she doesn't shorten it.

I know a few Edwards who go by Ed.
