Is Eleanor too close to Eliana (her cousin)

We had our hearts set on Eleanor then a few days ago my cousin named her baby Eliana. We are fairly close, see each other every couple of weeks. So we vetoed the name and have been looking at other names and settled on Rosemary or Josephine. However, this morning baby girl was born and she looks so much like an Eleanor and I desperately want to call her that. Are Eliana and Eleanor really too close? Eliana has a sister called Ariana so my cousin clearly isn't bothered about her own kids having very similar names, so maybe she won't care about my daughter being Eleanor, but be honest, can I really use Eleanor?

I think you can. Congratulations Flowers

Marcipex · 06/02/2020 15:31

Yes of course you can. Congratulations.
Rosemary is a lovely name too though.

FluffyEggsontoast · 06/02/2020 15:32

I definitely think you can

It’s such a gorgeous name 🥰

ManiacalLapwing · 06/02/2020 15:32

Seeing each other every couple of weeks I think it's fine. If they were raised as close as sisters maybe not.

CornishPasties · 06/02/2020 15:34

You should be fine to use the name and obviously you can call her what ever you like. However will cause confusion if they both end up as Ellie as her DD is unlikely to go by Ana if her sisters name also ends in Ana.

PrinkingPreening · 06/02/2020 15:36

I have an Eleanor and it wouldn't even cross my mind to wonder this if my cousin named her daughter Eliana.

So yes, I totally think you can. They are different names.

(Eleanor is a fab name btw!)

4forkssake · 06/02/2020 15:38

I'd say fine to use & a lovely name. Would she always get Eleanor or would you shorten it?

itmsylifeitsnowornever · 06/02/2020 15:55

She would be shortened to Nell/Nella/Nellie/Nora. Not Ellie anyway.

I think it’s a beautiful name and no I don’t think it’s too similar. Infact they compliment each other quite well if anything!

dayowl · 06/02/2020 16:25

I think it’s fine!

DeRigueurMortis · 06/02/2020 16:27

I think that's fine.

bridgetreilly · 06/02/2020 16:41

Use it. And maybe if you word the announcement as Eleanor 'Nell' Surname or Eleanor 'Nora' Surname or whatever, that will make it really obvious that you aren't giving her the same name.

user1493494961 · 06/02/2020 16:44

Yes, I would use it, Eleanor is a lovely name, especially shortened to Nell.

Astronica · 06/02/2020 23:33

Yes I think you can definitely use it, and especially with the update that you would call her Nell/Nelly/Nora for a short form. Eleanor nn Nell is one of my favourites. Congratulations!

DramaAlpaca · 06/02/2020 23:35

It's fine.

Urkiddingright · 07/02/2020 11:27

Of course you can, it’s not the same name.

Wintersun13 · 07/02/2020 11:35

If it bothers you, you could also go for something close to Eleanor like Leonor for instance.

But I think it's fine either way. The name I like for my son due in may is an anagram of my brother's name and I think it's fine too.

paperandfireworks · 07/02/2020 11:48

Congratulations! Go for it!

itmsylifeitsnowornever · 07/02/2020 14:02

Thank you. We have chosen to call her Eleanor Willow Lake. Announced to family and Eliana's mum has made no comment re the name being similar to her daughter.

What lovely names you have chosen.

Nonnymum · 07/02/2020 14:07

Of course you can call her Eleanor if thatvis your preferred name. Congratulations!

FernBritanica · 08/02/2020 06:42

Congratulations - lovely name Smile

badg3r · 08/02/2020 18:14

Lovely name and congratulations!!

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 08/02/2020 18:40

Eleanor is much more traditional and lovely than Eliana which is very trendy here (Italy) people roll their eyes a bit at an Eliana (though to be fair, most of them are Maria Eliana as Eliana isn't really considered doable in its own right) it would never cross my mind that there were any similarities between Eleanor and Eliana tbh beyond the first two letters!
Congratulations!

Mysterian · 08/02/2020 18:43

It's fine. Dave would be better, but Eleanor is pronounced pretty differently to Eliana.
