Welsh baby girl names

Bore da!

Expecting a baby girl in the spring and looking for middle names for my list of first names:
Arwen
Anwen
Arianwen

I'm really drawn to Arwen Angharad. It's long though isn't it?

I also know Arwen may not be a genuine Welsh name but I do love the character Arwen, so I don't mind too much.

Thanks (diolch) in advance!

I’m not welsh but have lived in wales for 20 years... most of the nice Welsh names I could think of ended also in -en (or -in or - on!) so those wouldn’t work with your first name choices (which are lovely, btw).
But how about:

Rhian
Lowri
Ffion
Eira

Welsh middle names are a little trickier I find because most assert themselves strongly as first names.

That being said here's some that might fit the bill...

  • Nia
  • Efa
  • Cadi
  • Mali
  • Mari
  • Gwen
  • Celyn
  • Sian
  • Myfi
  • Hefina

Hope that gives some inspiration

Eleri
Rhiannon
Gwenllian
Haf
Aderyn

I agree with what has been posted previously, some welsh names do push themselves as first names rather than middles.

Pob lwc ☺️

Luzina · 06/02/2020 11:22

How about Cerys, Sian, Lois or Nia as middle name.to go with Arwen? I like Arwen Lois (pronounced loys not low-iss obvs)

NoSquirrels · 06/02/2020 11:30

I think the proper spelling is Awen? It's beautiful (means "muse").

Angharad I love but I know it wouldn't be pronounced right.

I also love Lowri (but pronunciation can get mangled), and Eirlys (possibly slightly more niche!).

CoalCraft · 06/02/2020 12:10

I support a previous suggestions of Rhian

Clettercletterthatsbetter · 06/02/2020 12:44

I love Angharad and would use that as a first name. Maybe Angharad Elin?

Louloudia1 · 06/02/2020 13:03

Thanks so much for all the suggestions. Smile I definitely agree Welsh names make really strong first names so can be tricky as middle names!
Aderyn, Eira and Haf are lush!

Not sure but I knew a welsh couple and there daughter was called Seren. Not sure if it's welsh though!

Mamabear88 · 06/02/2020 14:05

I really like Carys / Cerys. They were on my list. How about Ffion?

bridgetreilly · 06/02/2020 15:10

I love Angharad and I really don't think it matters if a middle name is long.

jr12Ys0jYSK · 06/02/2020 15:12

wow, I never thought Welsh names are so different, interesting and really gorgeous

Ricekrispie22 · 06/02/2020 16:06

Arwen Meredith
Arwen Rowena

hotstepper4 · 06/02/2020 16:11

Eirlys. I love this, pronounced ire less. I might well have used this for a dd if I'd had one.

Louloudia1 · 06/02/2020 19:31

Thanks so much for these suggestions! Honestly there are some really gorgeous names here Smile

My dd has eirlys (ayr-liss) as her middle name.
Means snowdrop.
We saw lots of snowdrops on our first few walks when she was tiny

LadyLovelyLockz · 06/02/2020 19:58

I went to uni with a Seren and an Eleri. I also know an Anwen. All lovely.

noideaatallreally · 06/02/2020 20:03

For a Spring baby?
Mai(may)
Awen (inspiration)
Gwawr (dawn)
Catrin

I think a short middle name works well with a longer first name, but I really love Welsh names.

Mumma4262 · 07/02/2020 10:52

I love Cerys and Seren!

Beautiful Welsh names.

LittleBoyJuly2020 · 07/02/2020 10:54

Is Elowen/Elowyn welsh? That would have been my choice if I were having a girl Smile

spiderlight · 07/02/2020 14:08

I think Arwen Angharad flows beautifully! I love Arianwen as well (have you read 'The Snow Spider'?). I also love Beca, Cadi (welsh form of Katie), Cerian, Lowri.

erised · 07/02/2020 17:00

Rhiannon
Bronwyn
Seren
Wynny
Cariad (love)
Enfys (rainbow)

MikeUniformMike · 07/02/2020 20:14

Aderyn is dreadful. It is the welsh word for bird. Would you call your child Bird?

Eira and Haf are both nice, if you speak Welsh. They don't sound nice if you don't.

Wynny isn't a name.

Arwen isn't Welsh. It is from Lord of the Rings. It is occasionally used as a feminine version of the boy's name Arwyn. Awen is welsh, and is nice.

Anwen is very dated. It appeals to non welsh-speakers.

Arianwen will get mispronounced. It is 3 syllables not 4. Arr-YAN-wen not Arry Anwen.

Seren, Cariad, Celyn and Enfys are nouns. Seren is Star. Cariad is girlfriend/boyfriend/love/sweetheart/darling/charity. Celyn is holly. Enfys is Rainbow. Not keen on any of them used as names.

Meredith is an anglicised version of a boy's name.

How about Elen (EL-enn) or Gaenor?

MikeUniformMike · 07/02/2020 20:17

Awen in pronounced OU-enn (Ou like in Ouch).
Arwen is ARR-wen (Arr like in Harry).

Bronwyn is a misspelling. It is Bronwen.
