Scottish names - for Eilidh

marmitecheesetoast · 05/02/2020 11:33

DC2 is due in June, we don’t know what we’re having.

DD is Eilidh. Scottish but we are currently living in Manchester. Possibly will move back to Scotland in next few years but not certain. I would quite like DC2 to have a Scottish name too, but doesn’t have to be.

The problem is neither of us love any name as much as Eilidh! Last time I was in labour and we still hadn’t agreed any boys names so luckily DD was a girl!

Actually the one boys name I’ve always loved is Euan, but DH hates it and hasn’t been convinced over the last 3 years Sad

So, current shortlists:

Boys:
Angus (would this be too much living in England?!)
Alasdair (I think I love how it looks written down more than how it sounds? And I know we’d always be correcting the spelling here)
Finlay (quite popular)
Fraser (would people just think of Frasier?!)
Murray

None of them compare to Euan for me.

Girls:
Flora (would people just think of the margarine?!)
Isla (so popular though)
Fiona (DH not keen)
Elspeth (DHs favourite, I like it not but sure it’s not a bit ‘lispy’)
Ishbel (probably not realistic living in England, and DH not keen)

Iona is lovely but doesn’t work with our surname

Other names we like not on the Scottish theme are
Alice
Eleanor (probably too similar to Eilidh)
Edith
Mary (but it rhymes with Eilidh so think that’s a no-go!)
Florence
Esther
Orla

Thoughts, honest opinions and suggestions most welcome!

Ellis for either boy or girl

I love Flora and Ishbel from your Scottish list and all the names on your more general list. I love Angus, but like all the names except Murray. I think you worry too much about whether a name is 'too Scottish'! I live in Australia and Angus has been in the popular names lists for years. I can assure you no-one thinks about Scottish heritage or whether the name is too 'Scottish'! I know an Ishbel too and while the name is a nod to her Scots heritage it is just a lovely name. If Scottish people who are planning to return to Scotland can't use Scottish names I don't know who can - and many of these names are regularly used, and certainly well known, outside Scotland. I love Fergus too, a pity that's off the list.

Flora love love
Mhairi is also lovely pronounced with a V or M
A lot of people have suggested Innes but it’s hugely popular in Glasgow at the moment 6/7 between 3 baby classes I attend.
There’s 1 baby Angus and I love it, suits him to a T.
What about seamus??
Aaron is nice also
Not fergus or fergal ect it’s rank
Lachlan not too popular but fits Scottish theme
Carrick, Cormac, Campbell have also came up in recent baby groups.

I love the name Mairi and what is easier than saying Marry? An old version of Isobel is Grizel.

Bruce is fabulous too, and Hamish! And Maxwell.

Lorne is an underrated girls name

CormoranStrike · 09/02/2020 08:04

I’ve only known male Lornes.

TypicalMeBreakMyTypicalRules · 09/02/2020 08:25

My son is Alasdair and we debated the spelling. But, no one spells it consistently so I'm really glad we went with the original. Alistair, Alastair, Alastir, Alistir etc. And after a couple of years people are finally remembering the spelling.

FizzyGreenWater · 09/02/2020 11:19

Lorne! Like the sausage. No, not sure about that one.

For boys we have just had a little Ruaridh and love it (went for the more popular spelling over the traditional Gaelic).
I also loved Connor.
We both loved Ryan, not sure how Scottish it is but it feels it for me...probably as there were so many of them growing up in the 90s in Scotland. Unfortunately we have a Seth and felt it was a bit like the OC!

Absolutely love Eilidh. Would definitely be near the top of my girls names list.

Completely get wanting a Scottish name when you are living away from home when baby is born. Been listening to Caledonia on repeat and feeling very home sick!

marmitecheesetoast · 09/02/2020 13:26

That’s good to know @TypicalMeBreakMyTypicalRules, I think we are leaning towards Alasdair as a favourite for a boy at the moment. I don’t think I could consider spelling it any of the other ways anyway. I’ve only just thought about the fact I have a name with 4 or 5 different possible spellings too, and while it can be mildly irritating sometimes, i’m used to and it really doesn’t bother me.

I love all the suggestions of Magnus, it’s a name I’ve always thought was great, but don’t think we’re brave enough!

Feeling pretty settled on Flora for a girl now Smile
