Vintage or perhaps “quirky” girl names?

Only 6w6d but it’s my first, I’m a geriatric primigravida (will be 39 when baby born) and I’m excited as anything! Grin

The boys name is pretty much sorted ( we have it between two - Theodore nn Ted or Seth)

Girls names I find a lot harder ...

Names I like but can’t use for various reasons -

Ruby
Violet
Ava
Olive / Olivia
Erin
India
Polly

I really like Delilah and Honor also.

Anyone got any corkers to add to the list?

Thanks Grin

My great aunts, all born in the 1900s, were called:

Edith
Mary
Amy
Florence (known as Florrie)
Hilda
Constance (known as Con)
Lavinia (known as Vin)
Evelyn (known as Ev)
Vida

I don't know that names like Adaline were that popular - I'd never even heard of it until the Blake Lively film. Some names that sound as if they should be old, aren't!

FelicityFebruary · 04/02/2020 18:10

I think Edith is lovely.

FelicityFebruary · 04/02/2020 18:11

I knew of a few Edies growing up.

Pieceofpurplesky · 04/02/2020 18:14

Jenny is a gorgeous name.

Alsohuman · 04/02/2020 18:31

My mum and her sisters were born 1906 to 1918. They were:

Mabel Frances
Margaret Lillian
Dorothy Kate
Fanny (yes really!) Mary
Ena Elizabeth
Flora Annie
Jean Eliza

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 04/02/2020 18:43

Fanny as a name in itself and not a diminutive for Frances? My gran had a friend she went to bingo with called Frances but was known as Fan. My family and associates were always fond of monosyllabic nicknames!

Alsohuman · 04/02/2020 18:49

Yes, she was Fanny on her birth certificate but always called Fanna, my gran had used Frances for her first child.

MadamePewter · 04/02/2020 18:54

You definitely shouldn’t call your child Fanny!!

Alsohuman · 04/02/2020 18:55

Absolutely agree! The rest might come in handy, though.

spicedapples · 04/02/2020 19:35

Loving all the suggestions of Mary. It's an absolutely beautiful name and needs a resurgence

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 04/02/2020 19:59

My middle name is Mary, thanks to my grandmother, and I absolutely hated it growing up. It made me think of somebody with chin whiskers who smelt of lavender. I can't say I'm crazy about it even now, but middle names don't really matter once you're an adult.

Just a bit of perspective from somebody with a vintage name!

TatianaLarina · 04/02/2020 20:03

Mary is slang for vagina.

Alsohuman · 04/02/2020 20:04

Never heard that in 66 years. Must be a regional thing.

spicedapples · 04/02/2020 20:06

I have one of the oldest recorded names and it's never been cool or glamorous but I love it. I've many nicknames and I love them all
