Dora - love the name but can it escape ‘Explorer’?

So I have fallen in love with the name Dora. It’s short and sweet, not too feminine but still with that vintage vibe that I love. But more than that, it’s a really lovely name to honour my grandma and my husbands grandma (who is no longer with us) who are both called Dorothy. I actually also really like the name Dorothy especially with the nicknames Dottie and Dot but I think it might be a bit too much of a grandma name for us to use. I don’t love it in the same way I love Dora. However, I think Dora is a fantastic nod to their names.
My question is this. Can the name Dora escape the connotations of the tv show ‘Dora the Explorer’. Is it unusable because of this? Would it be similar to me naming my child Kermit or Hermione? Will that tv show even be relevant by the time she’s in school (still pregnant!)? And the most important, do you guys think I would be putting a target on her for easy bullying?

Thanks!!

Not sure how popular/well known Dora the Explorer is nowadays, as my DCs are teens so I'm out of loop with children's tv. I just came on to say I would use Dorothy (or Dorothea, which gives another shortening option of Thea). Had I had a DD, it would have been a strong contender. Dotty or Dot are fantastic nicknames.

Wilmalovescake · 01/02/2020 07:56

Nope. She’ll be Dora the Explorer forever.

Dorothy much nicer anyway.

embolass · 01/02/2020 07:58

Nope, never!

SundayMorningSun · 01/02/2020 08:14

It's lovely, much nicer than Dorothy. Tbh, some people do call their babies Hermione. There might be some explorer-based comments, but what can you do.

I have 3 and 5 year olds and dora is still extremely popular. Has been for ages, it’s not going anywhere anytime soon.

And I can’t hear the name without immediately thinking explorer, sorry.

Dorothea is not so granny-ish, and can naturally shorten to Dora I think.

WilsonandNoodles · 01/02/2020 08:36

Maybe Theadora? Thea seems to be rising the ranks so I don't think you would call it old lady ish.

My 3 year old has no idea who Dora is. Maybe he isn't watching the right channel he has friends called Sam and Pat and hasn't asked them to put out any fires or deliver the post recently.

8by8 · 01/02/2020 08:51

Actually yes theadora is a great shout.

soloula · 01/02/2020 08:58

I love the name Dora. And it does make me think of the explorer but so what? I know loads of kids with names that make me think of other things. For a few mins. Then I get to know the kid and the connections disappear and they start to own the name themselves. If you like the name, go for it. It's not like she's being named after a notorious serial killer or something. Dora the explorer is actually a fab wee female role model.

nocluewhattodoo · 01/02/2020 09:11

Who cares if it's associated with Dora the explorer for most people? My first association for the name Dora is the artist Dora Maar. I'd just use it.

Whatsyourflava · 01/02/2020 09:12

I love Dora

I know a lovely little 5yo with this name. Highly doubt anyone is thinking of the explorer anymore. I did at first but not after about 10 mins of knowing her.

noreciprocityherefella · 01/02/2020 09:14

I have a Theodora (age 5.5) who has ended up being nicknamed Dora a lot of the time. ‘the explorer’ connotations haven’t come up much, most notable was a grown woman who said it and tittered insipidly, but she’s like that about everything to everyone so Hmm

georgialondon · 01/02/2020 09:14

I love love love Adora.

IckleBear · 01/02/2020 09:36

Theodora or Isadora..

daisypond · 01/02/2020 11:19

I’d go for Theodora or Dorothea. Isadora is good too.

Ostanovka · 01/02/2020 11:25

I like Dorabella.

Thefaceofboe · 01/02/2020 11:49

What about Isadora? With nn Dora. I think initially Dora the explorer might cross people’s mind but it wouldn’t last long. Go for it, lovely name.

Stephminx · 01/02/2020 11:52

She’ll be stuck with the explorer reference, but she’ll grow out of that as an adult I’d think.

Go for it if you like it - you could always embrace the link and decorate her room in it etc...

TimidLividyetagain · 01/02/2020 11:52

My Mexican family with that name Dora is often short for Dorita or Dolores.

JacquesHammer · 01/02/2020 11:54

I don’t think it matters if you love the name.

My first thought was Dora Spenlow!

Levatrice · 01/02/2020 11:55

All of the longer versions ; theodora isadora etc are a really good compromise!! ( also love Adora , never heard of that before and I worked as a mw)

Bluntness100 · 01/02/2020 11:57

Yes she will be Dora the explorer at school. It's not bad but not sure I'd go there.

Theodora is a great name, but if you just shorten it to Dora the same issue arises. If you just use it as a nod to thr family link it would work.

MyNewBearTotoro · 01/02/2020 11:58

I love the name Dora! I think it works well as a stand alone name or as a nickname to Dorothy. Some people may initially think they explorer’ but it is unlikely to stick or be an issue. My DDs aged 6 and 3 have never ever watched Dora the Explorer as we don’t have Sky with that TV channel and I don’t think it’s popular quite UK kids in the way that Peppa Pig etc is so I doubt it will be a major issue with her peers and even if some do make the connection I imagine it will be seen as a positive thing by other preschoolers!

DuvetCaterpillar · 01/02/2020 12:01

Even if she does get comments about Dora the explorer, I'd roll with it - what a great set of associations to have! A brave little girl who's independent, loves learning and has adventures- that would do quite nicely as associations go Smile

halcyondays · 01/02/2020 12:02

Dorothy is much nicer than Dora imo.

Pinkflipflop85 · 01/02/2020 12:02

I once taught a Dora and regularly had to speak to my class to stop them from parroting 'the explorer' every time I did the register.
