We are due our first baby in June and cannot agree on names at all. We don’t know whether baby is a boy or a girl. Part of the problem is that neither is us have any names that we really like.

Our surname is Evan which is tricky as some names end up sounding a bit odd. I would love to hear what you would call a baby with our surname.

I knew an Evan Evans once but guessing that's not on your list Grin

SilverySurfer · 30/01/2020 14:42

Forgot to say Marcus and Cosmo would be on my list.

I like Violet Evan or Gemma Evan! So pretty!

For boys what about Garrett, Vaughn, Vincent, Thomas, Clive or Alexander?

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 30/01/2020 16:22

I agree with an earlier poster about 3-syllable names working well.

Dominic Evan
Alexander Evan
Gregory Evan

Romilly Evan
Elizabeth Evan
Jessica Evan

Tamsin Evan sounds like Tam's in 'Eaven.

-ie and -y names don't sound great.
-a and -o names will give the eliding r (Margot Revan, Anna Revan)

-d names will make the surname sound like Devon. Devon Evan sounds funny.

Heidi Evan is pretty.

I’d avoid names ending with an ‘s’ sound as the natural elision makes your surname sound like Seven eg James Evan can sound like Jame Seven or Nicholas like Nichola Seven

mathanxiety · 31/01/2020 00:19

Agree wrt Tamsin Evan, MikeAlphaMike.

But Heidi ends with an EE sound.

satsumasunrise · 31/01/2020 00:23

Yep three syllables sounds best.

Don't go for something like Olivia as you are forced to pause between the two names and it just doesn't flow.

Ooh! A pp has a great point about not choosing a name that can be a surname. I have a real problem with those. I can never remember if my dentist is Graham Stuart or Stuart Graham. There are one or two others like that. I go round in circles second guessing myself.
