Do you have/know one? I love this name but don’t want it to be shortened to Ollie.
Interested to know if the one that you know was shortened naturally to Ollie over time, or if they do get their proper name.
Thanks

I know an adult Oliver (never shortened) and a baby Ollie that was deliberately called Ollie from birth

Whatsyourflava · 22/01/2020 20:38

I think it’s a bit easier now at schools to enforce or avoid nicknames as all the forms say “known as”, so all the parents who want their olivers to be called Ollie will write down Ollie there.
Obviously you can’t control everything but it does make things easier when the teachers know what you’d prefer to be known as

You may not like Ollie, but I'm afraid you'll have little say. It won't be your name and You are going to look a bit of crank saying to his friends when he's 14 "His names Oliver not Ollie. So on that basis I'd think of something else Hope I've not upset you.

I have this exact issue, I love the name Oliver but dislike Ollie. Alot. 😬 I just know people would shorten it.

ivegotthisyeah · 22/01/2020 20:51

I have a Oliver who is just three when I call him Olllie he looks at me and says my name is Oliver! Nursery always call him Oliver and never shorten it

adviceneededon · 22/01/2020 20:55

If you dislike Oliver you really need to consider the longevity of the name. I work with two Oliver's, both Olly. As I really like the name Oliver I asked why they went by Olly and both said it just didn't suit an older man. Both were known as Oliver all way through school but went to Olly during their university days. My name can be shortened and my mother hates the shortened version, never calls me by it. I asked why then did she call me my said name, and she said because she wanted to enforce my formal name. Granted, all my family call me by my formal name, but all friends and colleagues know me as the shorter version...and she hates it...says it's common Hmm

bridgetreilly · 22/01/2020 21:54

Most Olivers I know are Ollie or Oli, but it's possible he may choose to be Oliver.

PurBal · 22/01/2020 21:59

I know a 4yo Oliver. But he hasn't started school yet... can't really force nn. My brother has a very common name and shortened version (eg Mike/Michael, Pete/Peter, Rich/Richard) but my mum loathed the shortened version when we were growing up. She finally succumbed in his mid twenties.

I have an Oliver. We don’t shorten it - he’s always Oliver!

This. I also don't like Olly.

LemonBreeland · 23/01/2020 08:26

Don't do it, if you hate Olly that much it's not worth it. My brother also has an easily shortened name, Think Daniel or Samuel. He is in his 40s and my Mum refuses to use the short version of his name, despite everyone else in his life using it. She ends up sounding ridiculous and formal.

Sunshineandsprinkles · 23/01/2020 08:33

I have a 3 year old Oliver. He's always been Oliver to us, never an Ollie, but I've heard others at nursery start to call him Ollie recently, so it's inevitably going to happen!

Pipandmum · 23/01/2020 08:36

There's two Ollie's (all shortened to this) in both my children's school years and I know three adult Olivers (not shortened). The name is very popular which would put me off.

emmathedilemma · 23/01/2020 08:40

Yes and he was always Oliver, never Ollie until he went to uni and his mates decide that's what he was called. But if you feel strongly about it I wouldn't use the long version.

spiderlight · 23/01/2020 11:25

My DS is friends with two Olivers - one is always known as Oliver in full and the other is always known as Ollie or Ols.

Rachel345 · 23/01/2020 14:35

Ols Shock that sounds awful imo!

Helpmechoose321 · 23/01/2020 16:20

I don’t absolutely despise or loathe the name Ollie but just rather he didn’t get called it, so was wondering wether it is inevitable! Seems a mixed bag so far
