Twin Boys Names - Picked. Do they go with middle names

KittenMittens1 · 22/01/2020 09:40

Hi All,

Have twin boys baking away due May 1st.

We have chosen, Alexander & Owen.

But we wanted to continue the names of our fathers for their middle names. John & Paul, the question is:

Alexander John
Owen Paul

or ...

Owen John
Alexander Paul

@TheWomanTheyCallJayne
Owen and John are most definitely not the same name.
Owen is a traditional Welsh name meaning "young warrior" or "well born," "noble." John is "Jehovah has been gracious" and is from Hebrew.

I prefer Owain to Owen, but both are nice. Owain could have pronunciation and spelling issues.

Eoin, the Irish name pronounced similarly to Owen, is the gaelic version of John.

Why are people saying they hate the name Owen when that isn't even part of the discussion?😂 I think the first order is the best but they all honestly sound fine! No one really says middle names anyway apart from being on documents Smile

TatianaLarina · 23/01/2020 14:19

I agree that Owen gets the short straw on this. I prefer Owain. Or Ioan.
Also like Osian, Gruffydd, Gethin, Tudur.

MikeUniformMike · 23/01/2020 14:19

I don't know why anyone doesn't like the name Owen.

I love it as a surname or middle name, but wouldn't use it because I know many people with it as a surname or middle name. I think I know 1 Owen (first name) and 2 Owains (it isn't pronounced Owen, but often does).

Both Owen and Alexander are nice names. John and Paul too (and George and Ringo)

Mumbassa · 23/01/2020 14:24

Owen is a lovely name, but is also a variant of John. So I wouldn’t have Owen John. Alexander John and Owen Paul sounds lovely

TatianaLarina · 23/01/2020 14:27

It’s not that it’s not nice it’s just a bit boring. It’s a common first name as well as surname.

If it was Owen and Dylan they’d be on a par.

elsaandanna · 23/01/2020 14:37

Owen Paul - one hit wonder singer. My Favourite Waste Of Time.

elsaandanna · 23/01/2020 14:38

I really like Owen as a first name, it just needs a better middle name

ilovechocolatebiscuits · 23/01/2020 16:00

Owen is not nice in my option, sounds old and boring! Hate it when people say about applying for jobs etc... in their generation names such as Bluebell, Jett and Clementine will be normal!

MikeUniformMike · 23/01/2020 18:47

@Mumbassa, see my previous post. Owen is a completely different name to John.

FernBritanica · 23/01/2020 19:09

Great names OP. I had an ex called Owen John and he certainly believed they were the same name so 🤷. I don't think it matters either way though - they're different enough to be used together and one will be for his granddad.

I'd go Owen John and Alexander Paul.

MikeUniformMike · 23/01/2020 19:18

They are not the same name, but Eoin and John are.

17caterpillars1mouse · 23/01/2020 20:49

I think Owen John and Alexander Paul sounds best

Tigerty · 23/01/2020 20:58

Alexander John sounds nice. I like that one.

I did start singing in my head Owen Paul’s “You’re my favourite waste of time” though I do like the name too.

IckleBear · 25/01/2020 12:19

Alexander John is lovely!
Owen Pascal instead of Paul Grin

mondler · 25/01/2020 21:37

Lovely names op, Owen was on our list but didn't go with our surname. I personally would go Owen Paul and Alexander John as both flow nicely but more due to the initials. AJ is a cool option for a knickname but OJ not so much what with orange juice being shortened to it plus OJ Simpson.

finallychangedmyusername · 25/01/2020 23:02

Owen and Alexander are both so lovely.

I really like the suggestion of Alexander Paul and Owen Jonathan as I feel having a longer middle balances out Owen nicely. But otherwise Owen Paul and Owen John are great too.

LizzieAnt · 27/01/2020 18:42

Agree with MikeUniformMike that Eoin and John are the same name, Eoin being an Irish form of John. Owen is a different name but is pronounced almost identically....could cause confusion especially if the name Owen John is heard/called out as opposed to read.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 27/01/2020 19:10

Just lurking and want to give a vote of confidence for Owen. I have an Owen and it's a lovely, classic name. Grin

Candyapple49 · 27/01/2020 19:27

Ooh , like both combinations but feeling more Owen Paul and Alexander John . I teach and teach many lovely Owens . To me it has lovely connotations .
