A sister for Sylvie

Really want a pretty, vintage name to go with Sylvie that is underused but not too out there. We’ve finally agreed on the below shortlist so just wanted some help to pick a favourite.

Pearl
Olive
April
Clementine (Clemmie)
Etta (Ettie)
Theodora - (Dot, Dora, Teddy etc - love the variety of nicknames for this)
Mabel

Would love to hear people’s thoughts.
Thanks!

Iris or Daphne

Curly

You can't call your kid Mabel. You just can't.

Nutkin123 · 21/01/2020 18:59

Olive!!!!

NoFun21 · 21/01/2020 19:01

Nicole would be beautiful with Sylvie. Francis would also be nice.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 21/01/2020 19:27

Mabel

NoCureForLove · 21/01/2020 19:46

FrancEs for a girl.

TatianaLarina · 21/01/2020 20:14

Prefer Clemency, same nn.

Pearl is downmarket, Mabel and Olive are dowdy, yes Clemmie is the only one I like.

MrsBertBibby · 21/01/2020 20:51

I really dislike them all, except Olive, and I think Olive really goes badly with Sylvie : too many Vs and one name really light and pretty, the other very earthy and heavy.

Edith would be great. Or Nina

MrsCantthinkofaname · 22/01/2020 09:17

Thanks so much for all the comments! Lovely to see they're mainly positive but quite a mixed bag on favourites.

I love the Margot, Iris and Edith suggestions but we have friends/family babies with those names so unfortunately we can’t use them.

I think my front runners are Pearl, Etta and Theodora (this changes constantly though) but DH worries that Etta isn’t a full name and should be short for something, like Henrietta. Although I really like Hattie and Etta as nn, I’m not a huge Henrietta fan. Does Etta seem incomplete on its own?

Also would love any middle name suggestions. We have a 1 syllable surname.

I really like Pearl Alexandra so far but haven’t got much further than that for any of the others.

Glad you love them all @Whatsyourflava Smile

Thanks for such lovely comments! Made me feel very positive about my list x

Oh with a short surname, I would definitely avoid Pearl. As a single syllable first and last name person myself, I hated it.

Yes Etta sounds incomplete (why I dislike it). Fine as a nn.

Mariette/a
Yvette
Esther

All sound nice with Sylvie, I think.

FizzyGreenWater · 22/01/2020 10:19

Etta and Pearl with a 1 syllable surname - hmm, I'd have a good think. Both will sound abrupt I think. They won't flow well.

Mabel or Theodora I think.

I really don't like April, to me it doesn't fit your list at all! Quite wet and just not interesting - a far more mundane choice than the others.

TatianaLarina · 22/01/2020 21:10

Iris is gorgeous. Streets ahead of all the others and goes best with Sylvie. I’d bin all the other options.

AcrobaticCardigan · 22/01/2020 22:19

Love Olive, Clementine & Etta! Love Sylvie too.

ilovechocolatebiscuits · 23/01/2020 16:05

First list where I have loved them ALL!!
But Pearl sounds amazing with Sylvie!!

In order for me:

  1. Pearl
  2. Clementine
  3. Olive
  4. Mabel
  5. Etta
  6. April
  7. Theodora

I think Olive, Etta and Mabel are getting fairly popular if that's an issue for you!

MondeoFan · 23/01/2020 16:07

All your names are great but personally I'd only have/consider April if my baby was born in April otherwise I wouldn't have it

Whatsyourflava · 23/01/2020 16:24

I don’t see it as a problem at all to have Etta on its own as a full name. I know someone with a Greta that gets called Etta if that’s of any interest.

MrsCantthinkofaname · 24/01/2020 02:05

@MondeoFan She is due 14th of April so she should be an April baby, providing she’s not early!

Audrey or Audrina

Iloveplacentas · 24/01/2020 23:13

Oh! I have a Sylvie. Her sisters name is Daphne. Two little wood nymphs....

Carouselfish · 25/01/2020 11:02

Carmen. Carmen Sylvie was the pen name of someone... a Queen? Can't remember.

Heh1991 · 29/01/2020 23:43

Etta!

bluemoon2468 · 30/01/2020 06:13

I like Theodora but I prefer Dorothy for those nicknames 😊

Aquamarine1029 · 30/01/2020 06:17

How about Ella?
