Laura or Poppy

Our DD is due any day now, and DH and I are torn between 2 names!

Could I ask for honest opinions on Laura and Poppy to help us decide?

Our last name is 3 syllables and a bit of an awkward one to get your mouth around so we want an easy first name. Middle names are most likely Rosanna Claire after her grandmothers.

We've been leaning towards Poppy for a while, but there seem to be a lot of them at the moment (not a deal breaker, just a consideration). Her brother is called Robbie so my other issue is whether it's a bit twee to have siblings both ending in 'ie' sounds. But is Laura too dated / dull? I've always liked it, but then I'm a late 80s child so grew up with lots of Laura's!

Definitely Laura. I like Laura and its unexpected these days which is definitely a bonus.

Poppy is cute on a little girl, but I personally wouldn't want such a cutesy name as an adult so that puts me off, sorry

thelongdarkteatimeofthesoul · 20/01/2020 15:49

Whatsyourflava different shortenings of the same name though - like Liz is a mum name but Beth less so... No colins or Brian's I agree. All Dave, Paul, Rob, Richard (Rick or Rickie not Dick as in the generation before!) or Steve...

ArtichokeAardvark · 20/01/2020 16:11

Wow, pretty decisively Laura then! Really good to hear it's considered classic rather than dated. I must admit it's one of the things I like about my son's name (full name is Robert) - there are very few other Roberts or Robbies his age but everyone seems to like the name.

Laura is gorgeous, while not quite a classic it's traditional.

Might I suggest Laura Claire Rosanna as it flows better, surname permitting of course. I love those names together.

I have no words for Poppy other than cutesy and twee. It sounds like a noise rather than a name. I don't think of it as a flower name.

Mamabear88 · 20/01/2020 17:48

Laura is nicer

Spied · 20/01/2020 18:01

Laura. Beautiful, a classic timeless name imo.

mytypeonpaper · 20/01/2020 18:43

Robbie and poppy are too much of a mouthful together

mytypeonpaper · 20/01/2020 18:43

Lara?

Peach7744 · 20/01/2020 18:54

I'm 28 and called poppy, personally I would say it's far more interesting than Laura which I would say could be a little bland.... 😘

LegallyBronde · 20/01/2020 18:57

Zara? Was my first thought when I saw Robbie.

firstimemamma · 20/01/2020 18:59

I really like both but poppy is more current whereas Laura is a name more common with women in my generation (I'm 30). Nothing wrong with that though! Both nice names.

Obviously only you can decide what each name sounds like with your surname though.

Good luck Smile

I love Laura and Lauren that a previous poster suggested.

Totally gone off poppy due to popularity

user1487194234 · 20/01/2020 18:59

Laura
I am not keen onPoppy

ToastandCheese · 20/01/2020 20:27

Poppy is overly popular and I’m not sure why as it’s very twee.

ladycarlotta · 20/01/2020 21:27

Laura's really nice. I get what people are saying about it being quite generational, but it's also a classic. And at least she won't be part of the wave of Poppys heading for 'mum name' status in 20-30 years.

Veto Lauren!

Lovelyloopyluna · 20/01/2020 21:59

Poppy is very twee but then Laura is very dated. I would prefer Laurel, Lara or Lyra.

123EyesOnMe · 20/01/2020 22:18

Laura...or Laurel...Lara...?

Don't like Poppy....and there are loads of them!! association for me is too much Rememberace Day too.

MrsBertBibby · 20/01/2020 23:09

Definitely Laura. Laura Claire Rosanna rather than the other way around. Flows better.

JKScot4 · 20/01/2020 23:12

Clara as an alternative to Claire?
Personally don’t like Laura as every one I’ve known has been a bully 😕

SemperIdem · 20/01/2020 23:18

I’ve never met a Laura I’ve liked. So Poppy.

BlouseAndSkirt · 20/01/2020 23:19

Poppy is such an upbeat cheerful name to me.

Laura Roseanna is a mouthful of Rs in the middle.

NewInTown08 · 20/01/2020 23:21

I love Laura! Beautiful, classic, short.

Douberry · 20/01/2020 23:26

Definitely Laura.
Personally I dislike flower names and Poppy is a bit too cutesy, saccharine and probably can't be taken seriously as an adult. Sorry to any Poppys (Poppies!) out thereShock

Astronica · 21/01/2020 01:09

I like Poppy but not so keen on it for Robbie's sister as they sound similar to each other. I love Laura, such a lovely traditional name. It wouldn't worry me that it was popular in previous decades, and it works perfectly as Robbie/Robert's sister. I think the middles the other way round would work better though: Laura Claire Rosanna.
