Help with twin names

BlueRaincoat89 · 16/01/2020 14:15

We don't know the genders yet but like the following

Girl/girl twins - Layla and Lilly
Girl/boy twins - Layla and Louis
Boy/boy twins - Louis and Cian

I never knew I loved names beginning with L! I'm not sure if having the same initial makes it a bit of a mouthful saying them together. What do people think?

Other names we like are Imogen, India, Grace, Margot, Henry, Ellis, Billy, Alexander. Any other suggestions?

I think your L names are way too similar and each name needs to stand out as an individual.

I like Alexander and Lilly.
Alexander and Louis
Lilly and Imogen.

daisypond · 16/01/2020 14:25

The L names are too much together. Louis and Cian are nice in themselves but are odd together.

Starshapeddreams · 16/01/2020 14:43

I think the names are nice but you should give them different initials.
My sibling and I share an initial and it causes bother with post etc.
I like
Lilly and Imogen
Layla and Margot
Cian and Alexander
Alexander and Louis

B/G Twins Logan and Lily
G/G Twins Lourdes and Aubrey
B/B Twins Cian and Alexander

I have the same first initial as my brother and that's caused all kinds of headaches over the years - I even paid in a tax rebate meant for him into my account as my mum gave me the letter thinking it was for me. Twins will have enough people lumping them together as one entity - at least let them have different initials!
Of your list I think Lily and Imogen go well together, as do Louis and Margot, and Louis and Alexander :)

PixieDustt · 16/01/2020 14:59

I think the spelling Laila looks prettier than Layla. But nice names I think.

Whatsyourflava · 16/01/2020 14:59

@ConstanceL but do you think that will even be an issue for the next generation? My phone bill is now online as are bank statements. My doctor is now online and blood results are now put on the website never sent in post. The only thing I actually do still get by post is HMRC letters but even that now has an option to set up an online portal. In 15 years time when theSe twins are old enough to to be getting official private information sent to them maybe they’ll find it hilarious that “Post” was a consideration for their names

Whatsyourflava · 16/01/2020 15:00

I love so many of your names @BlueRaincoat89

Lily and louis are gorgeous
Imogen, India, Grace, Margot, Henry, Ellis, Billy, Alexander - I actually can’t fault them I don’t think. Really love these options

ConstanceL · 16/01/2020 15:15

That was just one example of an annoyance of having the same initial as a sibling. But I do think as I said that twins will be lumped together so much anyway, it'd be nice for them to have their own separate initials. But really call your children what you like :)

BlueRaincoat89 · 16/01/2020 15:17

I completely agree with all those that think the same initial is a bit weird. I don't think it sounds right when you say them and I'll be saying their names together a lot! Finding one name is hard enough...

I think I prefer Layla to Lilly - it works a bit better with our surname. Don't know how I'll choose between Layla and Louis if they're a boy and girl - I've always loved Louis!

@ConstanceL yes I see what you mean - having a different initial each might make them feel like less of a continual double act which must grate even on the closest twins xx

MikeUniformMike · 16/01/2020 16:10

Layla and Lilly - you like L so much you added another to Lily. Nice names but the names are too similar
Layla and Louis - too matchy matchy
Boy/boy twins - Louis and Cian - not keen on either, no to Cian unless you are Irish.

Twins are generally 'The Twins', give them different identities.
L names are currently very trendy, I'm not all that keen as they become a bit samey.

DT2 tends to always be listed second, so choose a name that comes before DT1's so that at least on alphabetically sorted lists, DT2 will come first. Try to use different initials.

SpruceTree · 16/01/2020 16:21

I would avoid matching names for twins as it's a bit naff.
Plus you need to encourage individuality with twins- see all the research on the TAMBA/Twins Trust website for reasons why.

Mumma4262 · 16/01/2020 16:25

I have the same initial as my brother and never had issues with the post... most letters also put the first initial of middle names too. So if you was to do it, I’d say middles names beginning with different letters.

However, I think twins with the same initial are a bit too much, not that big a deal for siblings.

emmathedilemma · 16/01/2020 16:31

I think the names in your "others" list are way classier than the combo ones.
Grace & Henry
Imogen & Grace
India & Alexander
Margot & Billy
They work in almost any combination. Just Billy or officially William?

OwlBeThere · 18/01/2020 02:26

I like Ellis and India for both g/g and b/g
I like Ellis and Alexander for b/b

Astronica · 18/01/2020 04:39

Girl/girl: I agree not to have Layla and Lilly. Since you like Layla most I would choose Layla and Imogen from your list. Grace and Margot also would work well. I'm not a fan of India. Ingrid as another lovely option?
Boy/girl: Layla and Henry, or Imogen and Louis, are my favourites.
Boy/boy: I do like Louis and Cian. Otherwise Louis and either Henry or Alexander would work well. I'm not keen on Billy.

MaxPaddyandHarry · 18/01/2020 05:04

I have taught quite a few twins in my time and only one pair had names starting with the same initial. In reality parents seem to choose names they like rather than names that 'go' together.

Zezet · 18/01/2020 05:10

I like the names you picked very much but I think having the same first letter, last name, date of birth and place of birth is an administrative nightmare waiting to happen.

I would either pick names a little further apart or make them middle names and give them distinct first names.

Layla and Margot
Pearl and Henry
Otis and Casper

Dyra · 18/01/2020 21:22

I think you can get away with Layla and Louis. Though as with others, I think it would be better if they didn't have matching initials. From your choices, Layla and Alexander, or Grace and Louis depending on which name you like more.

Layla and Lilly is a flat out no. Layla and Grace/Imogen from your choices, or Alice/Charlotte if you want a couple more ideas.

Louis and Cian is also a no. Really not a fan of Cian. Louis and Alexander is the combo I like from your choices. Sebastian/Max/Theo are names I like that I think might work.

SinkGirl · 18/01/2020 21:29

My twins have the same initial. It’s a pain in the arse, even down to medical records being mistakenly put under the wrong twin etc.

They were the only boys names I liked at all though.

MondeoFan · 18/01/2020 21:38

I like the idea of using same initials but different names eg Layla and Lilly or Bella and Beau

When people I know have twins and the names couldn't be more different eg Natasha & Bailey I think it's weird

NaviSprite · 18/01/2020 21:48

I wouldn’t go for same initials (and didn’t my twins are George and Felicity) because I know that a lot of credit reference agencies struggle to separate twins data, especially if they’ve the same first initial (or first few letters of the given name) sounds a bit random and by the time my twins are grown up that issue may no longer be a problem, but it stuck in my head after working for a CR agency for several years 😂
