Hello there,

I am due in May with my 4th daughter. I really like the name Ide, but was wondering how popular the name is in Ireland. Also, is it pronounced ee-dah or ee-tah?

Thank you!

I’ve never seen that name before.
My first thought was Bewares the Ides of March..

Ita and Ida, however, I have seen. And you could pronouce either way, with an “eye” or an “ee” at the start.

Although more likely “eye”

I would pronounce that as Eye-d or Eyed-h. It's Irish.
I'd think it was a spelling mistake for Ida or Ada though personally.

It's pronounced EE-dah in Ireland. It has a fada (accent) on the first letter to give the long 'i' sound, so it should be spelled Íde to get that pronunciation.

It's a very old name and very old fashioned, I don't think it's had a come back yet. I haven't come across an Íde who's under about 70.

lol@BelfastNonBlonde I did think about the "Ides of March" as well.
Thank you all for your responses. DramaAlpaca, I especially love the EE-dah pronunciation. I am pleased it's old fashioned. I prefer old names. I read about St. Íde of Killeedy. The anglicised spelling is Ite or Ida. I live in the States, and have never seen or heard this name before here.
