If not Pippa...?

Please help! I'm currentl 38 weeks. We had settled on Philippa/Pippa for a girl (we don't know the sex), but I've been put off after recently finding out the numerous unfortunate meanings of this word across Europe. Dh still loves the name and isn't phased - he thinks it's still a beautiful name and she can simply use Philippa when travelling if needs be. Is he right? Can you suggest other classic, underused names with a lovely nickname that will age well? Time is ticking, so please help MN!

By 'age well' I mean a name that suits a baby, child, and adult. Thanks in advance!

I love the name Philippa and nickname Pippa. It's timeless. I've googled the "unfortunate" other meaning and found nothing so it can't be that well known and I'm still none the wiser!!!

yellowmelon · 09/01/2020 16:52

@herecomethedaffodils - apparently Pippa means wee in German, vagina in Polish, shag in Greek and wank in Italian Blush.... If it was just one language I could maybe get past it, but I don't know if I can! Any Pippas or mums of Pippas out there who can give me their thoughts - is this really a problem?! DH thinks I'm thinking about it too much.

I dint think those meanings are well known outside of those countries are they? Not a problem if so surely .

Agree with your husband that she could use Philippa and Pippa could be her endearing name. I know a little girl called Penelope and she gets called Penny.

PlantPotting · 09/01/2020 17:08

I personally wouldn’t use Pippa myself after finding all that out

How about Jemima?
Sadie?
Cora?
Imogen?
Margaret (Maggie)?
Edith (Edie)?
Clementine (Clemmie)?
Emmy?
Roxanne/Roxanna/Roxy?
Pearl?
Willa?

Delilah?

I think Pippa’s awfully dull, so I don’t think you’ve lost anything.

Couldn't she just use Pip or Philippa when travelling to those countries?

Sparklypurpleunicornsaremyfav · 09/01/2020 18:20

I love the name, I also have a 50yr old sister in law called pippa and she has never experienced any negative comments regarding the names meaning, she has travelled a fair bit too

eurochick · 09/01/2020 18:37

I have a colleague who works in a very international field and she always uses the full "Philippa". I think u might just have figured out why...

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 09/01/2020 18:41

Love Pippa, have several friends called Pippa or Pip, they don’t seem to have any kind of problem with it as they don’t call themselves their full name!

Penelope

Cbeebiesrehab · 09/01/2020 19:39

Not an issue, she can use Philippa when/if she travels, or Pip. I know a few young Pippas. My sons name doesn’t work in Germany-we still used it, he could go by his middle name if he moved there.

IsolaPribby · 09/01/2020 19:43

I really don't think that Pippa is vagina in Polish. Can't comment about the others.

MaggieFS · 09/01/2020 20:09

It's not just about DD travelling though is it, it's any time she might meet people from abroad. I've mentioned before about a colleague that hates her name Pippa for this reason. We work for an international company. Frequently when she has to say her name on a teleconference or even meets people out in bars in London she has to pretty much has to say 'yes, my name is Pippa'.

FWIW, I'll add allegedly 'blow job' in French to the list of unfortunate translations.

yellowmelon · 09/01/2020 20:11

@maggiefs - yes, that's my concern. We live in a pretty international city so I don't think it's just about travelling necessarily.

I had a colleague in my last job called Pia, which is lovely (as was she!) and which could work as an alternative nickname for Philippa.

It’s all very well him not being phased.
