How do you compromise on a name?

Newmamauk1988 · 07/01/2020 10:50

So I'm 37 weeks and myself and my husband cannot agree on a name for our second boy.

Our first son is called Cole so a little bit more cool, and this time round my husband wants to go more traditional where as I still like the names that are a little different. Any suggestions on how you reach a compromise?

Failing that we'll get the midwife to pull a name out a bed pan and I'll just slip her £20 to choose mine HaloWink

Both make a list of 10 names you like
Cross five off each others lists, and chose your top two of the other person's lists
Discuss the top names, and the other remaining ones
Each put them in order
See if you have common ground

Bash DH over the road if he won't agree with you.

There’s a website called Named Together that lets you see if there’s any names you agree on

www.namedtogether.com/

Thanks both :).
We've each got a list but just so far dont like any of each other's - oh dear!

Have you got a baby name book?

OneTooManyBathtimes · 07/01/2020 11:14

I told DH what each child was going to be called, he chose one of their middle names.
In my eyes, I'm the one who spent 9 months going through hell, so I was the one having the final say. He was more than happy with that.

We both had names we liked but the other didn’t so we bought a book and went through it until we both agreed on a single name; it was on neither of our lists to begin with.

Sexnotgender · 07/01/2020 11:18

We both just kept vetoing until we got to some common ground. We don’t have particularly similar tastes but we ended up with a relatively unusual name for DS that we both happen to love. Took a while though!

Could you have a classic full name but a more quirky nickname?

Christopher/Kit
Alexander/Sasha

PlantPotting · 07/01/2020 12:34

Cole is a great name! Love that!

I think there are names that should meet both your criteria. Don’t give up hope!

Here are some suggestions but I will think of some more for you:

Barnaby (Barney)
Christopher (Kit), as above
Wilf(red)
Nathan/Nathaniel - Nate
Rafferty / Raffy
Sidney/ Sid
Eli
Ellis
Miles / Milo
Seth
Chester
Otis
Eric
Casper
Rudy/Rudi
Dexter
Blake (too modern?)
Angus
Dominic
Idris
Percy
Caleb
Otto
Tristan

Any of these any good

Vincent?

Mrsjayy · 07/01/2020 13:05

Get your lists and find 2 or 3c names each you like/ don't hate then look at your remaining list and choose from that.

Proudpeacock · 07/01/2020 13:07

My friend who has a Cole also has a Jonah

mamablondie · 07/01/2020 15:15

The Kinder app is good you both download and then swipe the ones you like so you can see your matches. I found it really helpful wish we had known the first time round!

Newmamauk1988 · 07/01/2020 15:17

Thanks so much everyone!!

I think Drew would sound great with Cole, if Andrew is sufficiently trad for your husband.

notaregularmom · 08/01/2020 11:52

I didn't have any say with my first 3 kids names, they were named after their fathers family's members. With my 4th and 5th my ex understood that I'd never had the chance to pick names for the others so I was soooo excited. As long as he didn't hate them he just went with it.
