Gary?

I'm interested to know - would any expectant parents on here be willing or planning on calling their child Gary?
It's a sturdy name, but apparently falling out of favour.

I love the name Gary. If I had another boy I would call him Gary. It’s sweet.

My friend’s son has just called his hamster Gary, but I really can’t picture it for a baby.

Ummm.... My best friend (back in the 70's) had an elderly grandmother called Amelia. Now every other little girl is called Amelia.

There were a few Gary's in my class at school. Bring back Gary I say! 👌

I like Gary as a name, but you could make it a nn for Garrison.

I've had plenty people recommend using Gary as a nickname for Garrett or Garrison.
Why do you suppose people think these longer names work better?

I did it jokingly. I wanted to suggest Garyson but lost my nerve in case someone named a baby that.
I don't think longer names work all that well. Most get shortened.
Even Gary becomes Gaz or Gar.
Did nobody suggest Gareth? The welsh shortened version is Gai (pr. Guy)

I don't have any boys, but I did name DD1's toy giraffe Gary when we bought it if it's any consolation.

I’m an amateur genealogist and over the years have, with no exaggeration, perused thousands of family trees and parish records and can honestly say I have never come across the name Gary in England before the 20th Century.
A name best left unrevived in my opinion..

I'm 3 days overdue but i won't be calling him Gary, nor Archie, Alfie or Albie. nothing that's in the top 500 for that matter!

(This is in no way going to remind me of my childhood. Yes, it’s set in a working class London suburb, about builders and other associated trades, and yes there’s a lot of Garys, Lees and Pauls, but it’s nothing like my early life. )
All joking apart, only nice Garys in my family and school friends circa 1979. The Garys were love. The Bretts however, gits, the lot of them.

I had a neighbour Gary who was old enough to have fought in WW2. I think we will have to wait for the 1960s Garys to die off before the name gets trendy again, assuming the vogue for kitsch working class names of yesteryear continues.

I love it, much better than cutsey retro names. Gary Numan, Cole, Moore, Oldman, The Snail - all awesome!

And Carrie Fisher's dog - good enough for her is good enough for me!

I always assumed that Gary the dog was so called because it was then Carrie Fisher & Gary Fisher? Rather than any particular fondness for the name Gary?!

Gary was my absolute favourite boys name when I was 12. Along with Scott and James. Only one of those made the shortlist for DS.

I actually don't think it sounds like a name at all. More a brand or something? Maybe I'm thinking of garibaldi?!

After Team America Gary became a bit of a joke between a friend and me, we always call each other Gary. So it's a no from me.

I went to school with one in the noughties, he had bright ginger hair so obviously was known as ginger Gary. It’s an awful name.

But why do people think Gary is an awful name?
Does it sound bad, though Harry doesn't?
Does it conjure up bad images/memories?
What am I missing?

I think our kids' generation will call their children Gary, Tracey, Susan etc. After reading this thread and hearing 'Gary' in my head so many times it has grown on me though!
To digress, I wanted to call our son Keith, but was vetoed! If you remove all the cultural baggage, Keith is a lovely old English name, meaning 'Of the forest'.
